Saturday morning, and the students who had come to be known on campus as the President’s “special class”, with more or less envious or sarcastic connotations about their intelligence, were gathered for brunch in the dining room of the President’s Manor. Saturday was normally a day for them to sleep in a bit later before PT and then team training after breakfast, but this morning PT had been canceled, and instead they had been invited to brunch, much to the envy of their fellow students. After all, even excellent cafeteria food was still cafeteria food, and at the manor they could have cooked to order by Ms. Todd herself!
Brunch
What’s your special to order meal for brunch?
As the students chatted, laughed, and joked, the television was on in the corner, not a normal occurrence, as meals at the manor tended to be a bit more formal. Currently sitting around the table with the students were school president Dr. Paul Helios, head of security and physical education teacher Caleb Black, head of housekeeping Tamar Todd, business/economics teacher Esperanza Roman, and school physician Dr. Zoe Desatu.

“Good morning, Chicago!” a pretty, blonde female reporter in an inset screen greeted the hosts of Good Morning Chicago before the screen filled with the reporter’s features as she stood in front of a large crowd of people behind barricades. “Cassandra Nunez reporting live from Guardians Park outside Guardians Tower at Columbus and Randolph. As you can see behind me, there are quite a few people here already for the opening day of Guardians Appreciation Week here in Chicago, when everyone’s favorite superhero franchise join fans in celebrating the good the team has done throughout history, and heroes mingle with fans in supporting their favorite charities. There is quite the roster on the docket today, including retired members like Guardians founder The Highwayman, and even appearances by members of the new international teams. As you can see, the excitement is electric, with fans even dressed as their favorite Guardian, with their action figures and books for the heroes to sign.”

Dr. Helios turned down the volume a bit as he sipped his tea. “So we have a little treat planned for you students today,” he said. “I thought you might like to go and attend the Guardians Day festivities and visit Guardians Tower. Ms. Roman has lent us the use of her limousine, and you can feel free to choose your chaperone.”
Interlude instructions
What do you know about the Guardians? How does your character feel about them? Do you have a favorite Guardian? Write about one (or more) of the options below and take a Benny. Also, choose who you would like to chaperone your field trip.
  • Write about your favorite Guardian. Is he/she still on the team? Which team? (New York/Guardians East/Gotham Guardians, Chicago/Guardians Midwest/Windy City Guardians, or Los Angeles/Guardians West/Guardian Angels).
  • Write about a Guardian villain.
  • Write about a former Guardian who was recently released from the team for being a mutant.

Rob was okay with the idea of seeing the Guardians. But this whole chaperone everywhere thing was getting old. “I do not see the value of a chaperone I have been jumping from Paris to London, even back to home for a couple years now. Why do you insist on always giving us baby sitters?” Rob rarely had outburst like that, he liked to work hard normally. But seeing the Guardian would be awesome. Seeing them with an escort could be humiliating.

When came down to it though he would go with Ms. Roman, she was hot and that was at least pleasant. Thinking on it Rob wondered, what are the chances Watchtower would be there? He was the best of the Guardians, his abilities also strongly mimics Rob’s own. Maybe he would be able to learn something by watching the Telepathic master at work. Heck maybe just meeting him face to face would be cool. Rob did not follow the guardians like he should. He really did not think if he had to he could even name 5 members that were not on the New York team.

Hum, he really needed to study supers more. If he was going to end up in conflicts with villains then he needed to understand them and know what their weaknesses were.

Kat, who had actually managed to drop the attitude for a bit (aided, no doubt, by the appearance of chicken and waffles on her plate), shifts gears with the Guardian announcement, muttering mostly to herself, but probably audible to those sitting next to her. "And of course, if we don't want to go pay public homage to the oh-so-politically correct folks who kicked out the Gardener for being a filthy mutie, I'm sure we've got a list of chores waiting for us around here. Fine." More vocally, then, she nods. "I vote for Hot Momma. We go out there with Glitz, we'll get swarmed by papparazzi, and Sgt. Spook will just make everyone wonder who we are and why we need a bodyguard. Pretty sure Tamar can go full Governess without even needing to buy a new frock."

The Gardener was not only a mutant, he was also probably one of the most politically vocal members of the Guardians while he was on their roster, constantly deriding Western nations for their anti-environmental and anti-conservation policies. He probably would've been pushed out of the group before the current wave of anti-mutant sentiment, if it weren't for the fact that he was also one of the more powerful members--he could control plants, command and summon animals and turn the weather on his opponents. Since his ouster, he's gone quiet, occasionally showing up to protect Greenpeace ships and other environmental activists who skirt the law in the course of their protests. Of course, this has only fed anti-mutant prejudice in some parts of the political spectrum.

“Why do you insist on always giving us baby sitters?” Rob asked.

“Because you are underage and the responsibility of the school,” Dr. Helios pointed out. “Did your old school allow you to go places unchaperoned?”

Kat laughs at this. "Dude, some of us were in public schools. There were times when we weren't chaperoned in the school. And yeah, formal school trips usually had a teacher who would come along and sit in the coffeeshop or whatever, they didn't care what we got up to outside of class time."

Peter adores Ion Angel, the Guardian with the winged battlesuit. She is in the East Cost branch, and has a wide variety of tech additions that she can vary her suit with. Every time she appears in public, he enjoys trying to guess what any new item is before it is used.

He finds the villain called Von Neumann Assembler frightening, a mechanical villain who starts from small reproducing parts and increases in size and ability as more parts join. He is frightening because he keeps coming back, they never seem to find all the reproducing parts so that even if the main mass is destroyed, he comes back again...and seems to remember every prior fight so defeating him keeps getting harder.

He thinks about the Mutant called Freak Show, his power was that he could disassemble his body and animate the parts separately. He was also nearly indestructible as any damaged parts would grow back. He was not popular...most people found his powers grotesque, but he was effective.

In the question of staff joining them, he comments, "I have no objection to having a Chaperone. It is pretty much like any other school trip really. I am not picky about who, but prefer a guy, because I do not want to embarrass myself trying to talk to a girl."

“You are decidedly not at a public school any longer,” Dr. Helios reminded Kat.

“Have you given us reason to trust you on your own?” Caleb pointed out. “And maybe you need a female chaperone, Sam, to to get some practice.”

“Well, it is a public event,” Esperanza pointed out. “And I could spend the time shopping on the Mile.” She smiled

“Ah suppose as long as they keep their phones an’ IDs on ‘em, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Tamar said. “An’ show up at a prearranged meet up after the events.”

“If we trust them,” Caleb pointed out, looking at the teenagers.

"If we are going, let's go."

Looking at the other teens, "The status quo as well as the odds are certainly against us."

"I am quite certain that Doctor Helios and staff are well equipped to put us on ice should we get out of line. Besides Nexus is still looking for us and we give even a hint of our powers out and away from campus and there won't be a place we can hide or call safe."

Taking a step cl'oser to the photos of the Guardians, Caelian looks back at Dr. Helios and the other staffers. "Super heroes and mutants. My father taught me how to focus on the Super human and the individual. I guess their costumes are all right and their powers are ok, I honestly don't see much to be impressed with."

“You are decidedly not at a public school any longer,” Dr. Helios reminded Kat.
Kat rolls her eyes. "Course not. But you asked a question based on our past experiences, apparently forgetting that they won't always match the one-percenter offspring that seem to form the majority of the students here. Don't worry, I'm sure after awhile we'll all be so focused on the gilding we won't even notice the bars."

Kat snaps her head towards Caleb. "In case you haven't noticed, Sgt. Spook, we've all been toeing the line since we got here. You've all made it very clear that our choices are Nexus robot sex slaves, homeless street kids trying to stay off the radar, or this place. Congrats, you've managed to beat out that oh-so-tempting competition."

She pushes her not-quite finished breakfast (a rarity) away from herself.

Sam is eating his German Toast with strawberry-Maple Syrup and pineapple-orange juice, enjoying the treat, he looks up at at Caleb, "If you want, but she has to be ready to take what may come out of my mouth."

He will either sound insulting or perverted, depending...

Rob listens as they discuss the arrangements. They can say what they want about trust, but he is here by choice. Then when Probe starts making strong innuendo's Rob nearly spits out his drink, waiting for Kat to slap him or something. But she takes it in turn without setting him straight. Rob's face turns a little flush for a second as he busies himself turning away to get some water so his face could not be seen.

"Superheroes and mutants. My father taught me how to focus on the Super human and the individual. I guess their costumes are all right and their powers are ok, I honestly don't see much to be impressed with," Caelian said.

Dr. Helios smiled. “They are human, just like the rest of us,” he said. “Judge a man by his fruit, as they say. Or a woman.” He smiled at Kat. “They were founded to do good and oppose evil.” He got a distant look in his blue eyes.

"In case you haven't noticed, Sgt. Spook, we've all been toeing the line since we got here. You've all made it very clear that our choices are Nexus robot sex slaves, homeless street kids trying to stay off the radar, or this place. Congrats, you've managed to beat out that oh-so-tempting competition," Katt snapped at Caleb.

“You forgot the other option. Dead,” Caleb deadpanned.

“Mr. Black,” Dr. Helios scolded lightly. “They are full of youthful vim and vigor. A little rebelliousness is to be expected.”

Caleb’s dark eyes grew darker. “They aren’t the ones that have to pick out the casket,” he said darkly, getting up and taking Katt’s dishes and his own to the kitchen.

Dr. Helios looked sadly after Caleb.

((Feel free to continue RP, of course))

Not long after, the students were piled into a beautiful white stretch limo parked in front of the president’s manor. Other students, wandering the grounds enjoying their weekend, gawked at the “President’s Class”, whispering and pointing. Esperanza leaned against the side of the vehicle. “Consider this a test,” the beautiful Italian woman said. She was wearing her holographic disguise. “Behave yourselves. Keep your ID and phone on you. Carlos will drop you off at Guardian Tower. You have passes for the events inside. Carlos will pick you up outside of Guardian Park at four. Call if there’s trouble, and someone will be there. I had Tamar stock the minbar with things for you if you get thirsty or get the munchies.”

It took about an hour to get downtown. Some streets were blocked off around Guardian Tower for the crowds, but the Millenium Park parking garage was still accessible, and made a decent place to drop off, requiring only walking a couple blocks through the park to the tower.

The line to get in was a bit long, but the VIP passes the students held sped things up when they presented them to security that was working the crowd and the doors. They were dressed in standard black and grey security uniforms, with black jackets that read SECURITY on the back. They wore red berets as well, and both jackets and berets were emblazoned with a logo of a black canine head with large ears and an Egyptian headdress.
Common Knowledge
The logo is the symbol of Anubis Security. You know that Anubis Security is one of the largest security firms in the country, providing security for event spaces, home security systems and monitoring, protective services to celebrities and politicians, and also doing contract work in war zones. They are also one of three corporate entities that make up Nexus.
Smiling and friendly docents were welcoming everyone at the door and forming them up into groups for entering Guardian Hall, the large, open public space on the first floor of the tower. A large, open space with pictures of all current and former Guardians, the space was a sort of museum of superheroes, with memorabilia on display for the public to see, and a somber wall of the fallen in honor of those who had given their lives fighting for justice.

A temporary stage had been set up against the far wall, coopting the reception desk, for the Guardian Days presentations. To the left was an area for taking photographs with various cardboard cutouts of the Guardians, some of which had holes for sticking your face in. Another line was to pay for photos with actual Guardians.

To the right, a large sign indicated Highwayman Auditorium, named after one of the founding members of the Guardians, with a concession stand nearby, as well as the gift shop to go through before exiting the building.

Inside was crowded with people. Security inside was more of the Men In Black variety, but still sporting the jackal-headed Egyptian logo on their lapels, discreetly standing along the walls and near doorways and the bank of elevators that went further up the tower.

The ride was long enough to get boring, Sam spent it working on a sketch for a device he is working on. Figuring out where the gears, pulleys, and braces would be. It helps, when using his power, to have an exact design to follow.
OOC Comments
Just thinking here, Sam should presumably make an Engineering roll for creating any complex devices...when he does something more complicated than melee weapons.
He keeps an eye on the Anubis Security guards, not that he suspects them as such, but security is the logical group to replace (or reprogram) if you are going to stage an attack. Public gatherings like this are often the scene of highly publicized attacks...being public they ARE always highly publicized, and are frequently the subject of rants by groups that dislike superheroes and claim that they are as much of a public menace as those they fight.

Sam gets in the line to have his picture taken beside the standee of Ion Angel, and to put his head into the image of Celestial Dragon the team martial artist. He is supposed to be a kid, so acting the part is expected. He does not have the money to get his picture taken with any of the real members, though he makes a play of asking about it. He knows he will be refused, but not asking would be out of character.

He heads over to the desk to see what the schedule is supposed to be.

Rob watched Caleb leave, a slight frown on his face. He did not know what you are supposed to say in a situation like that. He honestly felt bad for Caleb, but he could not feel anything for some man he did not know. Did that make him some kind of psychopath, or was that normal? Even trying to think what it would be like to have his mom lost, he does not know. He would be angry, and he would start working on revenge hardcore. But Caleb just seemed to be going through the motions. Maybe this was something he would learn as he grew into adulthood.

Upon arriving at the tower Rob was feeling pretty paranoid. This was his first trip away from the school and his had his powers focused fully on awareness. Concentrating on a wish as they traveled he heightened his senses to the point he could see through walls and even brief moments into the future.

Before getting out of the vehicle Rob sees the Anubis Security people and instantly was on alert as Volo. Having the villains who kidnapped them before providing security made him as uncomfortable as possible. Looking to the others he nodded. "Would you look at that. Nexus's main military arm." He said making sure no one missed the threat. Thinking to himself I suppose that means the Guardians may as well be already brain drained. "May want to stay real alert for trouble I guess. Could be these are just honest guys here for their jobs. But my guess would be trouble in waiting. Ha, Anubis, fits. Something tells me they are focused less on the protector of the dead thing, and more on the god of death side."

Getting out of the vehicle he tries to act as casual as possible. But for a teenager, 'acting casual' is more likely to fail than succeed. There where so many things he wanted to see around this facility. But no way was he interested in being kidnapped again.

Kat is only knocked off kilter for a moment; by the time Caleb is leaving, she matches his deadpan. "No casket, just a bag of fertilizer. You can plant a tree as my marker. There's a company that takes care of it all."

Kat's own suspicions are pretty much confirmed as they see the Anubis Security goons. Standing in the atrium and looking around at the black-clad, death-god insignia-wearing security and the various activities being offered (so many of them involving additional expenditures of cash), she just grins. "Mmm... fascism and capitalism. They go together like vaginas and penises." This, of course, is said just loudly enough for the boys in the group to overhear--no reason not to throw them off their game a bit.

Wearing the oversized leather jacket she got from Esperanza, she skulks about the place. In many ways, she's better at being an 'ordinary teenager' than Rob is, because for the most part, she is one--specifically, a sullen, hostile teen who is unimpressed by things that adults think are important.

Her real focus is watching the Jackals (as they've now become marked in her mind), watching for any sign of lapsing. Specifically, if she has a chance to get one of those nifty red berets.....

Caelian notices the security. In someways he wished that he hadn't noticed. He wonders if Nexus had sent some of these goons to take care of his father and retrieve him.

Part of him thinks this meeting is too soon. Another part of him thinks that it did not come soon enough.

"The hounds go before the foxes. Expect trouble."

Caelian debates on whether it would be better to take a stealthy approach to finding more information or just wait and be observent.

Shanice doesn't care who the chaperone is. All she cares about is being unnoticed and easily forgotten, and that was even before arriving to a building full of nazis. She's got various people's money together and a long list to work through. This trip is all about shopping for souvenirs and waiting in lines to get them signed for friends and family. She pretty worried about the supers seeing through her holo at handshake range, so she ends up being just as nervous to meet heroes as any fawning fanatic fangirl, even when she's meeting some obscure hero she's barely or never heard of and is meeting for someone else's sake.

Kat sees the opportunity she was looking for--a few of the guards from outside coming in, presumably for a shift-change, checking in at the service desk. One of them is clearly flirting a bit with the receptionist, who isn't completely unreceptive--and during said exchange, he's taken his hat off and set it to one side on the counter. She slips off the jacket, and walks over to the desk, butting in the way any self-absorbed 14-year-old might. She sets the leather coat on the counter--on top of the beret. Smiling sweetly, she asks, "Excuse me, it's a bit hotter in here than I expected. Do you have, like, a bank of those lockers they use in amusement parks to hold stuff?"

Regardless of the answer she receives, she thanks the woman for her time, gives a side-eye to the guard, and then looks back to the woman and winks in WAY too obvious a fashion, causing the woman to blush, which of course draws all the guard's attention back to the receptionist. Kat then slides the jacket off the counter, and heads off into the crowd again, beret under the coat draped over her arm. Of course, if she was directed to the bank of lockers, she goes there first.

Round 0

Sam didn’t notice anything unusual as he entered Guardian Hall. There were a lot of people, gawking at the items on display, getting snacks, fan squealing over their favorite heroes.

Rob’s heightened awareness got all that and a bit more. He could hear some of the Anubis Security men talking, something about their daughter’s piano recital. But mostly there was a lot of jumbling of conversations from the number of people in the hall.

The Jackals, as Kat dubbed them, all seemed to be doing their job well. It was still early, though, and there were a lot of people. They didn’t really look particularly interested in the group of teens as they passed through.

The receptionist looked up from her flirting as Kat approached. “Yes, the guest lockers are down that hall, see where the restroom signs are? You’ll need a quarter to open it and get the key. I can make change if you like.”

The guard and receptionist flirted a bit more, before the guard looked for his hat to head to his duty station. He blinked. “I could have sworn I didn’t forget it this morning…”

A tall, handsome blond man in an expensive grey power suit strode onto the stage. His blue eyes looked over the gathered crowd and he flashed them a million dollar smile as he touched fitted the thin ear microphone onto his face.

“Welcome, everyone, to Guardian Days 2020!” he greeted, and the crowd started to settle down. “I am Peter Venta, as you might be aware.” He gestured to many of the promotional posters for the Guardians, which his face adorned, “The CEO and president of Force Majeure, Inc., and of Guardians, Inc. We are so pleased we could have you here today to celebrate the great work the Guardians have done to keep this city -- and the world -- safe from the evil depredations of those who would wish us harm. This week is a chance for us to give back to you, to the people who mean so much to us, the people of Chicago!”

There was a rousing cheer from the assembled crowd.

“So without further ado, let me introduce to you the Windy City Guardians!”

If the cheer before had been loud, this one was deafening! Loud music started playing, heavy beat, fight music that thumped in one’s chest.

“Please welcome Celestial Dragon!”

A small Asian man in his thirties walked out on stage. He wore a green and yellow gi, with the chest open, revealing a glowing dragon tattoo. His face was stoic, and as he reached the center of the stage, he bowed to the assembled fans, hands pressed together in front of him.

“The beautiful Zephyr!”

An attractive woman with a Mediterranean skin tone, black hair, and dark eyes flew into the Great Hall, held aloft by the winds swirling around her. Her costume was an airy white short Greek style dress with plenty of colorful ribbons streaming around her from her hair or tied to her wrists and boots. She practically danced on the air over the crowd as it roared its approval, the winds moulding the dress to her generous curves. Even when she landed on the stage, her hair and ribbons still seemed to move in a gentle breeze as she waved and gave a perfect smile to the adoring fans, blowing kisses and pressing her hands to her heart over her generous cleavage.

“John Henry!”

A massive mountain of a black man emerged. His head was shaved, he wore a goatee, and his yellow and black costume clung tightly to his rippling muscles. The yellow top had a deep V exposing his muscled and hairy chest. He carried a massive hammer over his shoulders. When he reached center stage, he started to swing the hammer around with incredible finesse, whirling and spinning. Then he brought it down on a massive anvil that had been placed on the stage. The steel anvil cracked in half.

“Power Man!”

A tall, lanky man strode onto stage. He wore tight leather pants and an open leather vest over his bare, slender, muscled torso. His hair was green and spiked up into a punk rock mohawk. He carried an electric guitar, and as he hit the center stage, he struck a power chord that reverberated through the great hall. Swirling winds lifted him from the stage, and then his hands ignited on fire. He bulked out like John Henry as he rocked out in the air.

“And the leader of the Windy City Guardians, the lovely Lady Liberty!”

A well built and endowed blonde woman flew out on stage. Her costume was red, white, and blue miniskirt with knee boots. Small and slender, she waved at the adoring fans and then easily lifted the broken halves of John Henry’s cracked anvil and tossed them off stage to the screams of the fans.

“And finally, our special guest from the Gotham Guardians in New York, the Iron Angel!” Peter Venta yelled.

A woman in sleek, feminine armor in blue and grey colors walked out on stage, waving. Steel wings emerged from her back, and she took off in a blast of repulsor energy and did a few turns in the air before landing where the rest of the Guardians had gathered, and they all took a bow.

As Peter Venta walked back to center stage, the Guardians took places at the table set up there. Peter smiled at the crowd, waiting for them to calm down. When things had gotten to a dull roar, he started speaking again.

“We have some microphones set up in the Great Hall here. If you would form orderly queues, the Guardians will gladly take questions from you. Please limit yourself to one question.” Peter flashed his charismatic smile. “And no, you can’t ask what their secret identity is!” he said with a laugh. “After the panel, the Guardians will be signing photographs for fans, and, as always, be sure to purchase your Guardians merchandise from the gift shop!”

Nothing seems amiss so far, though Sam keeps alert. Not that he would be able to do anything about it if something did happen, not in public.

He does consider what he COULD do. Morph a partial helmet and some light armor to help conceal his identity as well as defend himself. Add some spikes and blades possibly. He is not sure how much he could cover that way, something like light Chinese demon wrestling armor possibly or like the fictional Gaarda of one of the games he played once.

Hopefully, the situation will not arise today. He really needs to try it back at school first if possible.

Sam will get in line, and if he gets the chance to ask a question, "Iron Angel, do you create all your gear yourself, or do you have an R&D team?"

Shanice is enjoying this more than she thought ... as a second emotion barely eeking through the sheer terror of her holo being discovered while surrounded by nazis. The more Olympian goddesses entering the building, the better, that many less gynephilic eyes noticing a teen girl in the crowd.

(If Gardener is Hexx's hero, then hopefully it doesn't ruin fandom for her if Shanice is somewhat a fan, too. As much of her 'career' has been saving animals and watching over the waterlands, he's definitely been a rolemodel to her, especially in sticking to his values against peer pressure.)

Shanice's ends up enjoying meeting old vets at the tables with more likely boomer fans, in large part because her father and 'uncles' grew up fans of and some even enlisted because of military superheroes she was actually getting to meet. Big unexpected plus was getting to hear a WWII Liberty League Seaman Dutch talk war stories with another vet while a small group listened. She's still a teen, but she's vaguely got the concept in her head to catch old stories before they're gone.

She buys a hero bag just to hold all the stuff she's getting signed. She flat out told any relatives/friends "no" if they wanted her to get something signed by a BIG name, because she grew up in Florida theme parks and Knows crowds and lines.

Then John Henry and Power Man fly in ...it turns out seeing gods in real life with focused crowd energy all around really does have a tangible effect. She doesn't scream or cry, but she's solidly in the slack-jaw-stare crowd.

Kat thanks the receptionist and heads off in the direction indicated immediately, saying she's got change. Once at the lockers, she leaves the coat and hat there for awhile, but makes sure to retrieve both--the beret tucked under the coat--before the big show.

Kat's eye-roll is almost audible when the cheering and music start. "Sure, give the community the opportunity to buy more merchandise..." she mutters, sitting in her usual sullen fashion as the heroes are introduced. She watches them give their quickie demonstrations with no more than a modicum of interest.

However, when they mention the Q&A, her attention perks up, in a fashion that probably would've set off Caleb's warning bells if he'd been the designated chaperone.

She is obligingly demure as she gets into line, patiently waiting her turn to go up to the mic; when that moment finally rolls around, she speaks clearly and with a pleasant tone. "Yes, my question is for Iron Angel, Zephyr and Lady Liberty. Ladies, is it true that your contracts have a clause that says you have to take a minimum of three years off, unpaid, if you get pregnant and keep the baby?"

Naturally, the Guardians' contracts are under strict NDAs, but details have leaked out from time to time; this particular nuggets was first alleged by a supermarket tabloid about 6 months ago that had actually done a fair bit of back-up research, noting that since the 80s, there were several super-heroines whose unexplained hiatuses lasted almost precisely three years. Naturally, the Guardians have consistently refused to give any comment on internal matters, citing the NDA.

Rob sees the crowds getting excited and tries to see through it. But the truth is, such energy levels are hard to resist for a fully matured man. Let alone an immature boy.

Jumping in line Rob changes his mind on what to ask a dozen times, before getting his chance to ask a question. "My question is for Peter Venta." Waiting briefly for the acknowledgment so he can finish his question he asks. "I am sure you have a lot of support personnel and team members not seen on stage. What skills are most valuable to qualify to help the team for people without powers?"

If Rob was going to be on the team, he knew he did not have the heavy impact abilities of the others like Probe, Hexx and Highlander. But there are a lot of support roles and jobs he could do very well.

Maybe a little insight into the teams needed support roles would help him understand what the best options where.

“And our special guest from the Guardian Angels in Los Angeles, their own quake whisperer, Kineta Six!” Peter Venta announced.

Kineta-6, a slender, indigo, metallic android with supremely androgynous, hypnotically sensual grace, leaped from the entrance door, arcing over the entire crowd in a swan dive, only to roll at the last second and land on a toe tip.

Outstretching a runed hand at the precise moment, one half of the anvil Lady Liberty tossed aside landed on its sharpest edge on a fingertip, and K6 tossed it further away in slow motion, letting it tumble slowly in the air until it bounced on the ground, seemingly harmlessly, until it clapped down flat with its true weight.

((Thank you to Shanice for the special guest.}}

The queue for the questions starts to stack up. The students from Helios find that the admission badges they wear around their necks must be something special. When one of the ladies organizing the line sees them, they are ushered to the front of the line for their question.

"Iron Angel, do you create all your gear yourself, or do you have an R&D team?" Sam asked.

The Iron Angel spoke through her suit’s PA system. “I would like to claim the credit,” she said, “but I couldn’t do it without the Guardian’s support team. The suit is my creation, and I make sure to develop my ideas, or pass them on to the team. But being a Guardian can often be very busy, and I don’t have time to do as much of the R&D as I would like,” she said.

"Yes, my question is for Iron Angel, Zephyr and Lady Liberty. Ladies, is it true that your contracts have a clause that says you have to take a minimum of three years off, unpaid, if you get pregnant and keep the baby?" Kat asked.

Lady Liberty smiled at Kat as she pulled her microphone toward her. “Well, we can’t talk about the specifics of our contracts,” she said. “But obviously being a superhero is a dangerous business, and it would be very risky and foolish to continue while pregnant,” she told Kat. “Like most women, it can be a series of trade offs if you want to have a career and a family.”

"My question is for Peter Venta. I am sure you have a lot of support personnel and team members not seen on stage. What skills are most valuable to qualify to help the team for people without powers?"

Peter flashed his thousand dollar smile. “Of course. An effort like this needs a lot of behind the scenes talent,” he said. “As Iron Angel mentioned, there is the R&D team. But any role you can think of in a modern corporate economy is necessary for the Guardians, as well. The many unsung heroes of Guest Relations and Event Planning that put together this week’s events. Human Resources, accounting, liaising with local law enforcement. Not to mention helping to deal with any unforeseen costs after a superhero fight. Both Guardians Inc, and Force Majeure have generous paid internship and employment opportunities for those who might be interested. Check our website.”

Sam notes to himself that they appear to be treated as VIP's. Presumably someone programmed the computer that issues the passes to upgrade theirs. (Better to assume than than to assume it is the people who were being programmed.)

Ion Angel's answer is about as expected. Thomas Edison once said, "Invention is 10% inspiration and 90% Perspiration." Meaning it takes a lot of work to refine an idea into a usable invention. If you are out spending your time acting as a hero, you are not likely to also have time to do the grunt work of refining the ideas.

Caelian wonders to himself, why exactly were the teens brought here. If any of the Guardians are mutants, they are certainly hiding it well. More imprtantly, why show the teens something they have currently have no potential to be apart of?

Kat very clearly wanted to ask a follow-up question (or twenty), and even managed to get out the words, "Yeah, but," but fortunately for all concerned, the staff is diligent about enforcing the one-question rule, even for VIP pass-holders, and she's ushered off in gentle but firm fashion. Fortunately, she resists the mental urge--so very, very tempting--to shut down the microphone while her hand is still on it.

After the first consumerism pass, Shanice takes a break, and that's when it hits her strong enough to wince, the list of super spy soldier things she should always be doing.

She starts wandering around checking out where the exits are, what's around them, where the crowds are.

The only time she uses her VIP pass is if there are other neato places to explore that require it. Just a curious girl checking out the venue, or using her VIP pass "to find a less crowded bathroom that doesn't smell funky." And whenever she finds one she uses it, don't wanna make that 'notice me' mistake.

It's a real exercise in willfully walking passed or closer to the guards, but she tries.

As Shanice explores her VIP pass, she finds most of the areas on this level are open to the public, except for a few back offices and storeroom for the public relations and museum staff. A receptionist lets her know what it is good for. She will get front row seats to the viewing later in the auditorium, with a free soda and popcorn, and she can have one free picture with a Guardian. She got twenty percent off at the gift shop. Later there will be a meet and greet backstage with the Guardians that she can attend.

Gasps and cheers went up as a side entrance opened and a man walked in. He was old, though he seemed to move well. Half his face was covered by a black mask. He wore a tricorner black hat and wore loose black clothing for ease of movement, a long black coat, and high black boots. Two old fashioned flintlocks were tucked into a wide bandolier, and a rapier hung at his hip.

“Ladies and gentleman!” Peter Venta called out. “Our special guest, one of the founders of the Guardians, leader of the Liberty League, The Highwayman!”

The Highwayman moved through the crowd toward the stage, shaking hands with the fans. He seemed to make his way toward where the Helios students stood, greeting them, before heading to join the other Guardians on stage.
For Constance, and anyone who succeeds on a Notice check
The Highwayman gives Constance a wink and a smile.
Sprightly for someone in their nineties, he leapt onto the stage, pulled his rapier, and swished it through the air, leaving a trail of energy behind.

(when Phil Ochs plays during the leadup) "Oh." Shanice finds out about the VIP seating, heads that way and gets her seat during the mellow leadup. She finds her crew right as it hits her. "OMG, I know this song! He's singing Loreena McKennitt's song. My mom has these super-old CD's of her she got at a live concert."

Finds her numbered seat near/by Constance just in time to catch "the wink." blink.blink.rae over at Constance briefly.

Caelian is not impressed with all the flash and such. He keeps to himself for the most part, avoiding pictures, the press, and the Guardians. He does keep a close watch on the event security.

Now a super as old as the Highwayman is quite likely to actually be a mutant, although back in that era many were teratogenicly altered instead, a number suffered events that mutated them and others were always mutants, though not all of them knew it. If a high profile hero did not know they were a mutant, how hard would it be to prove they were? Sam wonders this as he watches the founder of the team approach.

Rob looks to the old man and back at Constance a couple times. Not quite getting what Kat suggested with the inappropriate motivation. Trying to clear his head, the man was an icon for justice and rightness, and here he is pulling an Epstein.

Something must be up, maybe she meant it another way. No way would he be brazen enough to do something so inappropriate in front of thousands. But Rob was at a loss as to what. Looking at @Hexx he asks. "Um, what did I miss. Did he do something?"

Rob shakes his head. "Um, okay, that is gross." Then thinking he might be being rude if Hexx was into old men or something he adds. "I mean if that is a thing girls are into I guess. But um, well..." When the interruption comes with the new announcement he is relieved for the break from putting his foot in his mouth.

Round 0

When the Highwayman winked at Constance, the time-manipulating mutant felt a light flutter in the timestream around her. Then it was gone as the Highwayman moved on.

The panel continued for several more questions before one of the Anubis security guards came up on stage and approached the moderator, Peter Venta. He held out his phone and leaned in to whisper something.

The Guardians on the stage paused, some of them touching their ears. They started to move, getting up from the table, except for the Highwayman. He looked like he might be dozing.

Peter Venta held up the mike and stepped forward. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. It seems a bit of a situation has come up that requires the Guardian’s attention, so we will have to cut this short. Don’t be alarmed. We do have a special treat for you. A bit of a sneak preview of the new Netflix Original Guardians Animated Series. Anyone with VIP tickets, you have special seating up front. General Admission ticket holders please form a line. There will be several showings to accomodate you all. Thank you!”

A murmur went through the crowd, and several people pulled out their phones to check the news as they moved to line up.
If you check your phone
There is breaking news with helicopter footage of smoke rising from a block of buildings on an island somewhere. The chyron scrolling along the bottom indicates that there has been some kind of incident, perhaps a breakout, at The Block, a supermax prison facility for powered individuals built on an island in the middle of northern Lake Michigan.

Sam nods, "And then attack the Guardians on their return, when their pants are down, while holding hostages in case the Guardians are winning anyway."

It seems a sound strategy to me at least, Thinks Sam.

He adds, "We need an exit strategy from this room, in case we are right...holding us all in one place and possibly drugging everyone here is a high probability strategy for enemy action."

Caelian's paranoia with the Anubis Guards may have given him the Intel they need to form an escape.

He looks over at Shanice @Winger, "What did you find?"

If the teens are being herded to the front, Caelian recommends "losing" their VIP passes and finding exits out asap.

Rob's mind never really went in that direction by default. But with the comments by the others and his already paranoid feeling around the guards he nodded. Shifting his mind a little and wishing for telepathy Volo says within the minds of his team mates. 'Hey guys, if things get bad, come close to me and I can teleport us out of whatever box they put us in. I mean, what if Kat is right? We need to have a evacuation plan. I can take a group our size about a football field in distance, which would at least have us out in public view.'

Volo maintains the communication until they are ready to enter the theater. Then swinging his abilities back around to the hyper awareness needed to avoid a trap.

Caelian nods at the responses from @Probe , @Volo , and @Winger.

"Anyone aware of where we are in the Tower? Floor? Interior/Exterior of the Building?"

"Best not to exit into open space and fall in the process."

Walking into the auditorium like room, he looks up at the projector.

Whispering to Sam @Probe and Kat @Hexx, "Anychance that either of you can disable the projector? Not having the show available will give some credability to us walking out."

Then to the rest of the teens, "Anyone seen one of those jackal guards, in my other size?"

The students filed into the auditorium with the other Guardians fans, taking their VIP seats toward the front, with whatever snacks they managed to secure with their VIP pass from the concession stand. There was a swag bag on their seats containing Guardians paraphernalia (feel free to describe).

The movie started with body cam, drone, news, and press footage of the Guardians in action before it began to quiet in anticipation of the first animated footage from the Netflix series.

Shanice has a John Henry, and a Liberty League backpacks, both filled solid with stuff, that she's struggling to smash in her footspace and around her chair. She's going through each on with Lady Liberty marker putting free 'return to:' airport address tags on everything signed for "hold for Shanice #23 at Lost'n'Found." And there's a poster tube that's thankfully not too big, and she's already rerolled/compressed at least a dozen posters inside it, from everyone. Pride and joy right now is her backpack and a poster signed by old vet Dutch and a few signed books.

She's scared to death of putting on or adjusting her clothing, out of paranoia of the pendant glitching this one time when she's surrounded by nazis dickheads.

She's generally been able to handle going to movies at weird times if there's a really small crowd. But this venue is blowing her mind. She's seen crowds like this in the stands but hasn't been part of one lately or ever, and definitely not when she was free to stand up and cheer with everyone else and ... be normal. She's in a minority of squealers when war clips show up in the montage, but those are the heroes she grew up with.

Kat, of course, has no purchased souvenirs, but hardscrabble upbringing means that free is free, though you have to watch out for the catch. In this case, though, it seems the only catch is marketing--though she notes with a smirk, "Hey, a free pack of collector cards, and a collector sheet listing all one-hundred by rarity. The packs are 'guaranteed to have one rare, super-rare, elite or legendary' card in them, out of the six cards...." She checks the list, does some math. "So, to get a full collection, assuming luck beyond all measure, the minimum number of packs you need to buy will be 19 more, at $5 a pop. Of course, since the five Legendaries only come up--" checks the sheet "--one every hundred packs, and there's five of them, if the odds are remotely average, you end up needing 500 packs to get the whole set. Oh, and this is Series I. How nice. You, too, can be a legit superfan of the Guardians for an average buy-in of only $2500--for Series I."

She then dutifully rips open the pack, and tilts her head at the foil hologram image of Legendary Zephyr. "Huh."

Shrugging her shoulders, she tucks the pack into one of her coat's pockets, then digs through the bag again, pulling out the poster for the animated series they're about to see, and curdles her lip. "Really, they couldn't have any of the three chicks actually facing the viewer? Do we really need to see all three of their butts?" To be fair, all three are in legitimate action poses--but those poses are definitely arranged in a very particular fashion--which none of the guys are.

Then the show starts. And Kat... shuts up. She starts out looking for flaws anywhere she can think of, of course--animation, voice acting, backgrounds, plot--but all to naught; the hardcore cynic simply can't find any flaws in this first episode. It even evades both the expected Happy Sunshine World and Black & White Morality phenomena, by hinting that a major villain in the series is a turncoat Guardian (an actual real-life former Guardian, even) who went by the supranym Masque (he was--and still is, really--a shapeshifter, though only to other humanoid shapes). They give him a sympathetic portrayal, though, by showing that he had reasons for betraying the Guardians--the other Guardians refused to negotiate with a terrorist group, and someone close to Masque got hurt, badly. The show takes some of the rough edges off--internet images of the real-world incident showed some fairly graphic images of Masque's comatose sister, whereas in the series she's fairly bloodless and looking almost serene in her hospital bed.

Still, it was one of the few times the Guardians in the real world faced not merely public backlash, but sparked legitimate controversy, and the show is fairly true to that relatively recent history, including the criticisms of the Guardian's decision to hardline the terrorist's demands. Gotta give 'em credit--though I wonder what Masque's lawyers had to say about his portrayal here. Hell, they probably had to get him to sign off on it.

The real Masque, now known to the world at large as David Wilmington, is actually in the very island prison that the Guardians were summoned away to keep a lid on, in fact.

OOC Comments
The bit about the poster is, of course, a reference to the original Avengers movie poster, which mysteriously has Black Widow (and only Black Widow) in full profile, with her hips twisted just enough to show off her glutes, while all the guys get to be head-on, or at least torso-forward. Funniest take I've seen on the matter is simply an image:

http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uplo ... /widow.jpg

Now, as for the episode....

THe idea is that yes, Masque was a real Guardian, and is now in the prison, after using his membership and powers to wreak some havoc a few years back. Curiously, one thing he's never done is attempt to, or even just threaten to, reveal his former teammates' IDs. Bit of a Code of Honor thing, going there, most likely, as doing so would endanger their own loved ones; he's made it clear his antipathy for them does not extend to 'innocents'.

As for how the hell they got him to agree to using his likeness and story for the series? *Points to the still-comatose sister.* Hospital bills cost money. I'll do an NPC write-up for Masque/David Wilmington later on, but figured I'd clarify the vibe I'm going for, here.

jaw drops watching kat pull a legendary ... long moment later it hits her.

"i'm so hiring you to do my shoppin' next time. and nope, i don't care how it happens."

and on the poster. manages a straight face.

"why would anyone want to see not-butt? don't you know it's like super sexy to be like" twisting in an amalgomation of what that pose would be in real life.

"see you get the sides of their massive cowbags, plus it's really straits the abs. and the constipated face is like really sexy to dudes, too. right guys?" presenting her cartoonishly extreme, yet quite accurate recreation to the boys.

get's kinda choked up at the Masque saga when it comes down to choosing family versus duty, specifically when it involves a medical problem, sniffles.

From the moment she'd spotted the Anubis security, Constance had made herself 'scarce.' She'd kept to herself, hovering at the fringes, staying mobile. She'd been taking pictures. Pictures of the guards. Pictures of the Guardians. She avoided the Q&A, not wanting to draw attention to herself. There'd be time for questions, oh yes, but not yet. She needed to know the right ones.

HIghwayman's wink, and the ripple in time, gave her even more consternation. How many time-warpers were there? Why did they all seem to know her? Highwayman was old, for crying out loud!

But then again, what did that even mean for someone who had time powers? She'd already realized that she was aging 'fast,' because of her frequent use of redshifting. Living minutes or hours when other people felt fractions of seconds. That time would pile up. She could 'fix' it by spending time warped the other way, but that always felt really risky.

Kat's ruminations on the attack at the prison didn't escape Constance either, but she still felt like Kat was thinking too small. The Guardians expunging their mutant member, and now working with Anubis...what if something more systemic was at work here? Superheroes existed to protect the status quo, after all...but who's status quo?

She dropped her swag bag on a table as if carelessly forgetting it. There could be tracking devices in it. Nothing about this could be trusted. When Constance caught up with the others, already busting out the loot, she wanted to say something...but what if there were microphones in them?

"You guys," she said. "We need to talk. Somewhere private."
Her eyes swept over the bags and the ill-gained loot within. "Leave all that stuff here."

Sam has collected a number of things, mostly stuff involving Iron Angel of course, but that is in character. He has an action figure with a number of swap-out weapons.

The signed photo with the Real Iron Angel is his main, keepsake, but the ones with the standees are in there too. He is not as lucky on his cards, but then again he does not mind.

Sam glances at the poster and comments, "That pose set only makes sense if they are guarding against an attack from away from the camera. But if they were they should be further back. Just goes to show, they are interested in visuals, not strategy."

When the movie starts, it begins with the event that brought the team together, the first invasion by the Von Neumann Assembler. The EMP they used to temporarily deactivate the monstrosity knocked out power for a 50-mile radius, but saved the world. It was quite a day.

Round 0

The audience was in rapt attention as they watched the Guardians on the screen, so it was with a bit of surprise when the screen fuzzed with static. There were some boos at whoever was controlling things, and then a new face appeared on the screen.

A man appeared on the screen. He was sitting at a computer set up of some sort, and he wore a grinning Guy Fawkes mask. He also wore a blue and white Alice dress and an oversized green top hat. Behind him could be seen a couple banks of computer servers and techs working. All the techs wore black and some kind of mask, whether it was an animal, or a president, or something.

“Ah! A full house! Isn’t this wonderful!” the man on the screen enthused, clearly looking out over the crowd in the auditorium. “We interrupt this event for a very special public service announcement. Allow me to introduce myself!” the man on the screen said. “You can call me the Masked Hacker, and I work for all lovers of freedom from tyranny and world order.” A sort of logo or symbol spun into view in the upper corner of the screen. It sort of looked like a Decepticon symbol.
Common Knowledge -2
It is the symbol of Mask, a worldwide terror organization.
“I am so glad to see you all here,” the Masked Hacker continued. “It will make the birthday present we are sending to the Guardians on their special day that much more poignant. So allow me to explain. Throughout the room, my associates have planted explosives, nice and hidden. All signals from the room have been blocked, except for the one I am using. So don’t bother trying to call the police or the Guardians, who, if the news is to be believed, are busy elsewhere anyway.” There was a grin in his voice. “However, I am not heartless. If you wish to send a final message to your loved ones, I will collect them and distribute them. Just text your name and message to the number on the screen.” He gestured, and a five digit number appeared at the bottom. “And now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming!”

With that, the screen flickered with static again and returned to the Guardians Animated Series as gasps and cries went around the room.

“Everyone stay calm!” one of the Anubis guards at the back said. “Please exit in a calm and orderly manner!” He nodded to his associates at the doors, who tried to push them open, even throwing their shoulders against the doors.

“Um, Sarge, they’re locked!” one of the men at the door said.

And so the panicking began.
Staged Quick Encounter
You have 4 tasks you can do, but you can’t do Task 4 until you find where the bombs are.
  • All uses of powers in this scene are at -2 as you try to avoid being noticed by Anubis. A Critical Failure means you got caught out.
  • Anubis Security can be treated as a Group and provide support rolls on any task at 1d6+Wild Die
  • If Anubis notices powers, they call for a Super Squad and could lead to a Quick Combat after this scene.
    • Task 1: Find bombs: Notice, Science, Common Knowledge -2, Powers; one character
      • Success: Number of bombs found (number is secret)
      • Failure: +1 bomb
      • Critical Failure: +1d4 bombs
      • Second character can try if failed.
    • Task 2: Keep people calm (Persuasion, Intimidation, Taunt, Powers)
      • Successes needed: One per character (6), and crowd can then be used as NPC support like Anubis Security.
      • Failure: Bumps and Bruises as people panic; -2 to subsequent tasks as people panic
      • Critical Failure: Take a Wound as you get jostled, trampled, etc.
    • Task 3. Get doors open (Repair -2 no tool penalty, Hacking -2 tool penalty, Electronics -2 tool penalty, Athletics, Powers)
      • Success: One per character (6)
      • Failure: Bumps and Bruises as you are pressed by the crowd
      • Critical Failure: Take a Wound as you get jostled, trampled, etc.
    • Task 4: Deal with bombs (Repair -2 no tool penalty, Electronics -2 tool penalty, Powers)
      • Successes needed: One per bomb
      • Failure: Bumps and Bruises
      • Critical Failure: Take a Wound.
      • Task Failure: Take 1d4 Wounds as bombs explode.

Constance watched the screen in disbelief, then shook her head.

"Too many things to be paranoid about. Alright, I'm going to see if I can find these bombs. Not sure what good that'll do unless someone here's a bomb disposal expert, but maybe we can...take cover from them or something."

She hurried off to get started, then paused and went over to one of the Anubis guards. It took a lot...it wasn't like Nexus didn't know her face...but at the same time, it seemed unlikely that Anubis would be running image-recognition all the time. Right? Right?!

Worst came to worst, she could just run.

With a bit of cajoling, Chance managed to enlist the help of some of the guards as they combed the building for the bombs...

When the video steam get interupted, Caelian looks to the other Teens and whispers, "Should we have expected anything less?"

As the hacker completes his spiel, Caelian turns around in his seat, then stands up in it. As the guards at the door attempt to open the doors, he almost smiles to himself.

He motions for the other Teens to join him on the chairs to watch the unfolding events. The first one to join him he leans over and says, "Ten bucks on the skinny lady near the west end. She makes it to the guards first."

"Another ten on the fat man in the middle there panicking and having a heart attack."

The symbol does not remind Caelian of anything in particular. "Any of you know that masked windbag?"

After placing bets, Caelian heads to the front near the projector screen. Approaching the podium he realizes he might be a bit short, so he grabs a chair to stand on.

"Excuse me ladies and gentlemen. Would you all please take your seats?"

"Please retake your seats. The doors are locked and this a-hole," Caelian points to the screen where the masked figure was, "wants the panic. Let's not give him that, shall we."

Waiting for the Guardian fans to take their seats, Caelian continues.

"I am not certain who that was on the screen. Obviously he was not one of the Guardians."

Getting a laugh from the audience, Caelian tries to loosen the tension in the room.

"Anyone with that information please pass it forward."

Taking a view of the entire room, Caelian continues.

"Hopefully none of you took the opportunity to text anything out."

Pulling out his phone, Caelian powers it down. "It is best that whoever that is, has no direct access to us."

Kat lets Caelian play nice, opting to direct her attention to the hardcore idiots who insist on panicking.

"Hey, you, lummox in the orange hoodie! Back it off, that girl you're pressing up on ain't interested! And you, Waily McTears! Get off your damn phone--do you WANT the evil terrorists to know how to get in contact with your folks? C'mon, these guys ain't even very bright, since they're giving us an actual chance to get out before the bombs go off--let's not try to be as dumb as they are, okay?"

Amazingly, the insults and specific call-outs seem to work, getting more of the kids to stand down and quit trying to rush the door, though there's still a few stragglers that can't hear her or Caelian over the noise right at the moment.

He ain't telepathic but Caelian looks at Shanice and says in his mind, "No you got this. Keep it together."

Caelian continues to talk. He keeps his tone cool, even, and friendly. "Just take a look at the space you are in and maybe the seats around where you are sitting. Anything that looks like it doesn't belong. Just raise your hand like we do when we are in school."

When and if people begin cooperating Caelian, motions for @Probe and @Chance to casually join the Anubis guards as they inspect the situation. Stepping away from the podium a bit, Caelian approaches @Hexx Katt. "Keep up your 'friendly' manner. Call people out. Maybe we can get the other fans to coral and control the rowdy and panicing."

Heading back to the front and the podium, Caelian keeps an eye on the transpiring events. He follows his own advice and scans the ceiling for anything out of the ordinary.

(wip)

(action did occur. shanice snuck behind a curtain, formed a force shape, and smashed it into a certain wall where people wouldn't see it, but didn't do enough to break through)
old version 1-22-20
shanice gets out a CrystalComet flashlight from her stash and walks casually to the stairs at the side of the stage. then up around the corner to backstage presumably to look for bombs. she does swing the light around like she's looking everywhere, but is really only interested in one spot, making sure it isn't too encumbered by equipment or wires or such.

no doubt some anubis guards are checking the backstage service door and back alley exit. but no one has a reason to be paying attention to the stage right structure wall. she doesn't go far, it's actually the lines of curtains right at the stage edge she's after, 20' from the spot she wants to use. she wraps up between the heavy black and burgandy curtain in the dark, where she can see the blank backstage wall, but no one presumably can see her.

she is a nervous wreck, but she's committed now. she willfully turns off her pendant out of nightmarish premonition that her powers shocking it off might make it not want to come back on.

hopefully out of sight of the public and anyone else, she forms a shallow but 10' wide 8' high rectangle by the wall, and rams it through as hard as she can.

The interruption is not entirely unexpected, by us at least. We presumed that the Guardians being drawn away was a pretext leading to a strong possibility of an attack.

While Caelian is less than thrilled to be in the same room with the Jackal Hounds (Anubis) he does appreciate their tactics for stilling the crowd. There were several points where he nearly lost control of the crowd and @Hexx and Anubis managed to step in at the right points to keep the crowd from raging.

Round 2

Constance moved around the room with the Anubis guard, searching for the bombs. She found two. Was that it? Were there more?

Caelian moved to the front of the crowd, trying to calm them. His speech seemed fairly successful. Several got defiant looks on their faces and pulled out their cell phones, powering them down like he did. But there were still a lot that looked like they were on the verge of panic. And it never took much to tip a mob over the edge.

Shanice found herself slipping into panic, rocking in her seat and hugging herself.

Kat yelled at the crowd, adding her insults to get them to further calm themselves, but a few were still rushing the doors and getting in the way of trying to get them open, risking crushing someone.

Then there was a loud crash coming from backstage. Someone screamed about the bombs going off, and the Anubis Security guards hurried to try and keep them calm, getting everyone to return to their seats, or help look for the bombs.

TASK 1 (Find bombs): 3/5 bombs found
TASK 2 (Calm crowd): Completed
TASK 3 (Get doors open): 1 success
TASK 4: (Deal with the bombs): 0/5

  • Anubis Security can be treated as a Group and provide support rolls on any task at 1d6+Wild Die
  • If Anubis notices powers, they call for a Super Squad and could lead to a Quick Combat after this scene.
    • Task 1: Find bombs: Notice, Science, Common Knowledge -2, Powers
      • Success: Number of bombs found (number is secret)
      • Failure: +1 bomb
      • Critical Failure: +1d4 bombs
      • Second character can try if failed.
    • Task 3. Get doors open (Repair -2 no tool penalty, Hacking -2 tool penalty, Electronics -2 tool penalty, Athletics, Powers)

The Sheeple having been properly herded, Kat leans over to look at one of the bombs Constance found. She reaches out to touch it, her hand in an awkward position--Constance herself might be close enough to see the small surge of black energy that flickers around the bomb, but the guards aren't.

"Oh, hey, look at that. The timer on this one's frozen. These Mask guys really suck at this, don't they?" She calls out to the guards. "Hey, maybe everyone should look for the other bombs. If they're all as badly put together as this one was, we can stop freaking out!"

Caelian leaves the stage and passes @Hexx Kat and @Chance, "Keep working with @Probe Sam. Those bombs are here."

Finding @Winger Shanice proves a little more challenging. When he locates her behind the curtains, he looks at her with concern. "Don't let the crowds get to you. We need your athletic skills at the door."

Gently leading Shanice through the crowds, they make their way through the press to one of the exit doors. "You remember, the security doors in the underground parking garages of the Lockhart Stadium when they had a bomb scare? We need to outsmart these doors, like we did then."

Caelian studies the security doors but from behind Shanice, doing a surprising job of keeping the press from overwhelming her.

@Highlander is specifically looking for her, and figures out the deformation of the curtain, picking her out.

she about has a heart attack when he moves the curtain. she rushes to turn her holo back on.

C: "Don't let the crowds get to you. We need your athletic skills at the door."

S: "In other words, that's stupid. You'll never get through that wall. Stop trying to be useful on your own. Got it."

spoken through clinched teeth. her eyes are wide and she's utterly paranoid someone caught sight of her before the holo kicked on as the curtain moved, thus adding some to her curt response.

get's tugged, turned, but resists.

S: "Just wait. I saw stuff back there."

shoves the curtains over to him and shines her flashlight behind the screen where all the speakers are to look for bombs, but also for anything metal and yankable they can use as a ram or crowbar or tool.

if nothing looks about right, she let's him corral her towards a door. she mutters about what she can't do as they move. and a few yards away, literally just out of frustration to prove to him that it's useless, she breaks from his grasp and sprints at the door and heel kicks it as hard as she can.

Sam has located at least one bomb, so he is first going to work on disarming it. He will reach into his pockets and pull out his tools, (he has a number of basic tools actually with him...that is in character...but if he does not have one he needs he can reach into his pocket and morph it, his powers can be used subtly...unlike some. Assuming they actually took all his tools...which is possible...he has his Ion Angel figurine with attachments and anything else he mighthave gotten from his goodie bag.) then get to work.
OOC Comments
There are three options here: 1) Sam has his normal tools, 2) Sam has Improvised tools, 3) Sam has to use his powers. Preferably Option 1, but whatever works.

Option 1) Repair [dice:1ymazyjc]62474:0[/dice:1ymazyjc], Wild Repair [dice:1ymazyjc]62474:1[/dice:1ymazyjc]
Option 2) Presumably the same rolls with the -2 Penalty
Option 3) Stealth [dice:1ymazyjc]62474:2[/dice:1ymazyjc], Wild Stealth [dice:1ymazyjc]62474:3[/dice:1ymazyjc], Spirit [dice:1ymazyjc]62474:4[/dice:1ymazyjc], Wild Spirit[dice:1ymazyjc]62474:5[/dice:1ymazyjc]
I am assuming the spirit roll to use powers is only at -2 if the stealth roll fails

Caelian thanks the Nubies standing nearby but points out that brute forcing the door just has not been working.

Talking to the Nubie guards some more, he points out that they are better trained for finding and dismatling the bombs. After all Caelian is just a kid.

He is quite insistant on the fact that there are more bombs to be found.

Caelian finds it funny that he is giving direction to adults but he proceeds past his concerns about the Nubies involvement in his father's killing to point out that the guards should be looking at patterns and studying the bomb devices already found. @KahlessNestor

To prove his point to the Nubie guards, he tries to figure a pattern out with the two nombs discovered.

Kat's thinks furiously. We have to find the rest of the bombs.... Once we're outta here, gonna tell Spook to train some of us in bomb-location, for crying out loud.....

Train... that word triggered a line of thought. During her sessions, she'd been learning more and more to listen to the little gut-instinct telling her to jump away, or duck, or step to the left. It'd saved her a lot of bruises during the bouts, and clearly frustrated Spook to no end.

But she realized, that same 'get away' instinct was kicking in when she got close to the one bomb to shut it down. The danger was soon enough to make me jump, but the hackles on my neck raised in the same way they do before I get that premonition to get out of the way. Maybe... She focused, harder than she ever had before, on that sensation--not the instinct to jump, but the precursor that told her to listen to her gut when the intuition came.

Walking around the stadium in this state of preternatural awareness was more exhausting than she expected, but it worked. She could just barely, at the fringes of her consciousness, know that YES, this was a bad place to be standing. It was like a game of Hot/Cold with the stakes dialed to 11. It actually made her feel a bit queasy to be aware of the sensation and resist acting on it; instead, she flipped one seat up, making it obvious to anyone who looked that the bomb was there, then she went over to the curtains at the side of the stage, and pulled it aside, shouting, "Hey, got another bomb, here!"

Sam continues doing as he has done, hopefully the bombs are the same design so that the others will be easier to disarm, but he is smart enough not to bet on it. Smart bombers, as these seem to be, at least in movies make their bombs LOOK the same but have differences making it so that what disarms one will trigger others.

Sam quickly checks the second bomb and sets out to disarm it. If it is simple enough he will move on to the next bomb. He, at least, is not using any powers so far (other than his senses, which are always on), which means no one will be alerted that he is superhuman by his actions.

Round 3.1

Kat used her preternatural abilities to find the last two bombs, while Shanice managed to plant her Size X shoe just right to at least put a bend in one of the doors.

An Anubis guard moved over to help Sam, but he didn’t seem to be trained in EOD. “I’m just a security guard, kid,” he said nervously.

CONSTANCE AND SHANICE LEFT TO POST THIS ROUND.

TASK 1 (Find bombs): Completed
TASK 2 (Calm crowd): Completed
TASK 3 (Get doors open): 4/5 success
TASK 4: (Deal with the bombs): 3/5
Staged Quick Encounter
You have 4 tasks you can do, but you can’t do Task 4 until you find where the bombs are.
  • 2 Rounds
  • All uses of powers in this scene are at -2 as you try to avoid being noticed by Anubis. A Critical Failure means you got caught out.
  • Anubis Security can be treated as a Group and provide support rolls on any task at 1d6+Wild Die
  • If Anubis notices powers, they call for a Super Squad and could lead to a Quick Combat after this scene.
    • Task 1: Find bombs: Notice, Science, Common Knowledge -2, Powers
      • Success: Number of bombs found (number is secret)
      • Failure: +1 bomb

shanice ran up and kicked a door ineffectually. then marches off supposedly flustered to a row of seats to get on hands and knees and crawl along 'looking under seats for bombs.'

at least the flustered part isn't an act, because she's screaming in her head that this is never going to work, but things are getting tense. time to get stupid.

she looks around for the door that either no one is paying attention to/already gave up on, (notice) but doesn't see any, so she's gotta settle with the door with the most people pressing to it, the most effort and distraction.

she's just a girl low to the floor between seats moving along, nothing to see here. she gets where she has the barest line of sight between furniture obstructions and legs, to see the bottom footboard of the doors. aiming intentionally low where hopefully no one's looking, even between legs if people are pressed to it.

forms the smallest wedge she can dream up, repeats the 'kill bill' and bruce lee mantras of the 1" punch, and hits the gap hard as she can. if she can get through it, it keeps going to dislodge whatever's on the other side till it's smooth sailing then vanishes asap.

she clicks her holo back on as fast as she can after and looks up very belatedly surprised like a civvie, then goes back to 'searching'.

Chance doesn't fancy her, uh, chances at bomb disposal. If Anubis wasn't around, maybe she could time warp them into delaying the blast and carry them out while redshifted...but they were. That didn't leave her with a lot of options.

She took a run, marveling at how weird it felt to run without redshifting, at the door and hurled herself at it, trying to do with speed and weight what she wouldn't be able to do with simple muscle mass. Force those doors open so the kids could get out!

Shanice surreptitiously -- and Constance a lot more openly -- managed to add their weight to getting the doors open, and soon the exits are clear. People start to rush out.

Caelian looks up from the door where @Chance and @Winger had both been assisting. Standing up on a chair near the door, he gets the attention of the Nubie Guards and have them begin directing traffic. Once he has their attention, he carefully moves Shanice and Constance out of the press of people.

"Not sure how many bombs we have in total, but @Hexx and @Probe could probably use our help."

With only one bomb left to disarm, Sam can concentrate on finishing his work. He does have time to quip, "Obviously as bombers, they ARE duds, if so many of the bombs they plant fail."

Not as bad as some of his lines at least.

He has some practice now, so hopefully he is able to finish this without trouble.

the door opens. the crowd flows. the girl on the floor pops up looking at the noise and sees people leaving. visibly relaxes and straightens up brushing off her clothes. as the boy her age corrals a blonde girl towards her and angles towards the others working on bombs, she gives a thumbs up and walks over to her original seat, picking up all her stuff to leave. then follows the others over to see the last bombs being dealt with. she keeps looking down a her hands in tense moments reassuring herself her skin is still brown. otherwise, she's a numb doll following along, looking at the guards and the flow of people for anything that strikes her as suspicious.

"No thanks, Wet Dream." Nope, Kat still hasn't forgotten @Probe's first words, and if she has anything to say about it, neither will he.

She grabs her stuff, then, and heads for the doors with everyone else; once outside, she looks around for something very specific--she's trying to find a news crew, ideally one that looks like they're broadcasting live....

As Caelian helped direct people out of the room, Kat was working on one of the bombs. She managed to surreptitiously use her power to short out the bomb.

Sam works on the last one and manages to disconnect the timer from the explosives.

The Anubis guards usher the teenagers out with the rest of the civilians. In the lobby, civilians are being hurried out, and the bomb squad is hurrying in. Kat looks around for reporters, but they are all outside of the Tower behind a police corden. A familiar woman with raven hair and a white suit is waiting in the crowd, as well, the white limousine sitting down the street.

Sam is pleased that he managed to do his fair share of what needed to be done, without doing anything that could reveal his super powers. As far as his teachers go, his behavior was above reproach.

The fact that he succeeded in saving lives, and kept at least one guard distracted in the process, is certainly a bonus. Especially since one of the lives he helped save was his own!

He wonders what the bomb squad is going to find with the bombs he did NOT disarm.

He has, unfortunately, made himself highly visible in disarming the bombs. The odds are very good the police will want to question him before we can leave.

Kat sees the woman in white, and the cameras. She ducks into a group of kids that seem to be heading the way she wants to go--but then the group itself turns, partway to the cordon, leaving her standing out by herself. She glances over at their chaperone, who has just spotted Kat, and is crooking her finger.

Lacking plausible deniability, Kat slouches, and dutifully walks over, ultimately being loaded into the limo with the rest of them.

Shanice is a packgoat walking out in a mountain of con lootbags, not just her own, but everyone else's in that aisle that were preoccupied.

Which also makes for crowd cammo shielding. She mangrocery walks along with whatever river heads to the limo.

Mutter speaks low to her crew as they go,

"So we brief Esper, then what? Any news on the goodguys being trapped at the prison? Can we figure out where Wannabomb is from the outside now? Stick around in case bombsquad get's hurt? I can help as long as the nazidicks clear out."

Sam says, "Odds are, the police will want a sworn statement from everyone before they let us go...and ME they are going to question rigorously because I happen to have disarmed three of the bombs with a pocket multitool."

He is not really happy at the prospect, but it is better than being blown up or publicly outed as a mutant...at least he THINKS it is.

He doubts even our youth and connections will be able to prevent our having to give statements.

Caelian leans in close to Sam, "How do the police know? None of the cameras were recording anything in the theatre, if there were cameras."

"My guess is the terrorists closed of all communication devices in or out of the theatre, remotely."

He lets the crowds go by him and around him and then slips back inside the building to gather what information he can from the Nubie Guards.

"And," Kat adds, as she rejoins them and catches up on the conversation, "the guards probably aren't going to be telling folks how they had to let a bunch of kids save the day. The cops aren't going to be interviewing a few hundred students, either, and they'll get all sorts of conflicting stories if they try. If there's one thing you can rely on, it's people being stupid and dishonest."

Then she turns to Shanice. "What, on earth, makes you think we're going haring off after the Vault crapstorm? We are not Guardians; we're not even adults. We got lucky that we only got caught up in the B event. Let the grown-ups deal with the mess on the island." A pause, and then she adds, "Besides, a group of teen superheroes showing up at a high-profile mess like that? Face and voice-recognition software's a thing, and simple masks won't fool them very well. Look at what's happening to the protestors in China. I ain't going to be joining Helios' little army until he coughs up something like your doohickey for all of us, but one that actually lets us hide our identities--you know, make me a 5-8 blonde with honkers out to here--" She gestures, improbably, "--or maybe even a dude. Really throw them off the track."

to @Probe
"Sam, if you get grabbed to talk, you know how boomer's eyes cross the moment you get in to game terms? Swamp'em. You totally learned all this from video games and youtube. Make up indie games they can't find on Steam and they'll never know. SimSWAT or something."

to @Hexx
"Hold yer horses. I didn't even say that. But if the adults need me to, I can drop and head there right now and just check. With all those guardians in some kinda war, no one will care about a Florida grapegirl flying by as long as I don't get involved.

If the NSA or whatever is doing all that voice identity stuff on us, then A. we're already screwed cuz that means this whole thing was to isolate US. and B. that means you better thank our babysitters for stoppin' you from going on national television, yaknow?"

to all:
"Let's just chill and get in the limo and see what 'Charlie' says. Maybe Esper's already bought off the cops and they'll forget us zoomin' outta here."

no matter what's going on, shanice is heading to the limo to dump off all the loot. that's the closest to a 'home base' she'll feel safe at to catch her breath, but then she'll be more than able to head back out depending what happens.

Sam frowns and replies, "Because that is what police do, they question everyone who was there and compare the physical evidence to the sworn statements to reach the truth. Beside, even if all the built in devices were turned off, the odds are fair someone had their cellphone on record and it is in memory. I doubt the bad guys worried about stopping that. Actually, I would think they wanted it on record to taunt the Guardians when they get back."

Not his usual linguistic failure, but he is not quite his normal self at the moment.

Time: 1:15 PM
Weather: Normal for season (cold); light wind; no precipitation
Location: Guardian Tower/Chicago
Scene Modifiers

Round 0

The police’s first concern was to get everyone a safe distance from the tower and get the EOD unit inside to remove the explosives. A few officers eventually got around to segregating people into those inside and outside the theatre that might know something. They were focused at first on talking with the Anubis Security guards.

Caelian snuck up to listen in, but didn’t really hear anything he didn’t already know.

Esperanza was waiting for the students in the limo. “Have yourselves some fun?” she asked. She eyed Shanice and her load of loot. “Looks like it,” she commented. “So what happened?” She looked toward the crowds.

Caelian did his best not to be disappointed with the lack of information. Anubis is still on his list to investigate.

He exits the tower and falls in with a group that is just being released from general questioning from the police and peels himself away from the group as they pass the limo.

He just shrugs as Esperanza gives him a look and just says, "It was personal."

"Things were going well until the Guardians decided to grandstand and show off their new NetFlix cartoon. They get called away and then the entire theatre was in lock down by terrorists or at least I think they were terrorists."

"Anyway. The crowd was calmed. Exits were opened. Bombs were defused."

With that Caelian sits back in the plush seats of the limo and relaxes.
