The Sun Always Rises

Post by Pender Lumkiss »

A day after the battle, the group had found themselves in the mountain home of the heroic Daemonix and glitter-boy Pilot Durango. It was perhaps strange to see demons, lesser ones, but nonetheless demons working and planning their next move to help folks in the eastern reaches of the federation of magic. Whether for the sake of the 77th, or themselves the Daemonix remanded themselves to the forms of five of the tomorrow legions recruiters.

A big guy, with a brown mustache named Hank II pointed at the map everyone was gathered around, " Look this town here, they have had reports of slaver attacks. We should go there next to help them defend."

The cool stare of Slater IV watched him as she answered, " Yes Hank II, but they also report those amazonian warriors have fended off the slavers... These so called Shemerian's have cut a swath of territory from here to there. We need to respect their boarder... Now this town..." It went on like these for the better part of an hour and in the end nothing was decided except to reconvene the next day.

Down the hall way Captain Claude was lying down in a gurney recovering from his wounds in the battle. Durango was next to him applying a RMSS kit to help in the recovery. Captain Claude had lost both his legs, and an eye, but he was determined to properly meet the heroes of the 77th.

He grimaced and shooed Durango away, "Common kid enough mothering for a day. The 77th is here... Please... Everyone come in, argghh... Come in."

Durango packed his kit up and shook his head and moved his frame to the back of the room, he grabbed @Antipas's arm and softly said, "I'll be just out side, try not to to excite him. He lost a lot of blood and his wounds... We'll jeeze look at him. He was hit with a demon blood forged sword by one of the slavers... Magical healing just has the reverse effect... " The grackletooth shook his lizard snout and swished his tail. He cracked a grin before exiting, "It was nice to see you though. I have been waiting a long time to fight with the 77th." Something about the kid's eye caught the team, a look of wisdom not seen in the youthful, Grackletooth were hard to peg for an age but perhaps this kid was a bit older than he used to be.

There was plenty of room in the makeshift ward for the team. Claude pulled himself up a bit so he could see you better. " I had hoped we would have met sooner, but this world has a mind of its own." He tried to smile but it just hurt too damn much. " Argg I owe you an explanat-" His voice caught in his throat, "Damn... Cass is that really you? Haha, oomph... It really is..." His eyes rolled back into his head done talking for the day and Durango came back in.

The grackle looked really concerned as he was shooing everyone out he growled softly, " I'll bring Claude down to the morgue, when he wakes. He wanted to show you some of the remains, and the tower you helped save."
Only Mrs. Dee's body was there. Her features were cold, and she seemed to have a look of sadness across her dead face. Some piled suits of charred armor unrecognizable from what it once were on the floor in a corner. Captain Claude waved you all in doing his best to explain. His voice was tired and hoarse, "Mrs. Dee was the only body recovered. The altaran women's bodies killed were most likely retrieved before we could get to them. Outside one wrecked slaver barge was recovered. When we opened the armor of the other Sunaj assassins a fail safe destroyed the bodies with in. Except for..." He tossed @Antipas a clan ring, " This ring... True Atlantean, and your clan Antipas."

The Captain spat swearing in his native language, " It came to this... So many of our kind have died in the war against the Splugorth, and now some have sided with them?" He shook his head in disbelief, " Hopefully it was just Mrs. Dee and whomever held that ring... Still, the Splugorth are moving against the last enclave of True Atlanteans. They sent a fleet of staships to the three galaxies and I recovered the time table of their attack and from where it would come, but until now I lacked the means to transmit it to our clansmen... Thanks to all of you that has now changed." Leaving the body of Mrs. Dee behind, his hover chair made it way out of the room, " Follow me if you wish to see how your efforts saved the last of our race."

The heroes found themselves outside in the bitter cold, but instead of down at the base they were at the top of the largest mountain. The deamonix had made a series of tunnels, and hollowed out rooms throughout the mountain that went from its base to its top. Claude was pointing out into the snow at a gleaming spire of wires and rock, "Right here this is what you did." It was clearly a communications spire. But one of a design that was clearly made using stone pyramid technology interwoven with rift tech. Out of the cold Claude tapped on a display, "This all started just after I saw Casseopia being put into a cryotube. We, Pender, Dee, Bison, Stormforge and myself got waylaid by assassins just outside of Shamlin sometime ago. Cass was poisoned by something we did not have time to get a handle on. Later we discovered it was the same weapon the Splugorth used to decimate the In'Vallin race. Or rather a version of it designed to target the True Atlantean race..." He smiled at Cass, " It does me good to see you up and alive... Over the last several years we learned that the Splugorth had launched a fleet at sub light from the nearest system to our enclave in the three galaxies. It had to be sublight or the early warning detection arrays would get a bead on it. With no reliable way to reach them we resorted to setting up an interstellar communication device." Claude raised his hand, " I know... Crude... But ever team we sent, and we sent plenty over the years ended up dead with the message undelivered... It was like, they knew what we were doing, each and every step. So apart from the rest, and with funding from the Tomorrow Legion I built this..." He tapped a screen in the arrays operation room. Monitors lit up, and a map displayed on a large central screen. Four dots lined the eastern sea board. " There, we set up an array on 4 nexus', the last one here... There is a nexus far below the mountain. The Deamonix have hooked technowizard like cables to the array feeding its power..." He looked at the heroes with a proud smile on his face, "The 77th CIT... A master engineer, a scourge of the three galaxies, a shirtless spy, a product of the gene splicers, one of the Talaukian princesses, and the last of King Rex's flamewind line... Perhaps some of you did not know your lineage or doubted your abilities." He pressed a button on the panel before him and whispered, "You just saved the entire race of True Atlaneans, what will you do now?"

Something beeped on the pad in his hand. He glanced down at it and chuckled, " No rest for the wicked eh? If you all are not doing anything else, looks like Libertas from the 13th SET needs an escort out of CS controlled Iron Heart. He has a doomsday level robot in custody... It Does not have to be right now, but he is requesting escort in the next three weeks... You all deserve some time off of course, so its really up to you."

In the aftermath of the battle with the Splugorth little was known of the heroic efforts of the 77th CIT. Whether it was by design or because they perished, in either case all records of their existence and mission were expunged. Captain Lumpkiss and his ally Diamond Clad made it all the way back to Castle Refuge where the captain began a series of therapeutic session with the mind melter @Ophelia Monk. Diamond clad took an extended leave of absence from his mayoral duties to help the arcane engineers at the legion understand the box @Wittsen Dolgon had used to trap the extra dimensional being called Freddy. But what of the heroes themselves? This is a chance for you to give some indication of the next step in your heroes adventure or possible retirement.
A special note from me... Thank you all so much for being on this wild ride. I am sorry that we sort of left the story unfinished, perhaps with the next wave of the books we can look to revisit the stories of some or all of these characters. It was an absolute pleasure being your GM.

Luke was incorpreal for a while after the battle. His exoskeleton was recovered but Xander refused to respond to any promptings. His actual body was unscared thanks to @Cassiopeia's quick thinking during the standoff with the Sunaj.

Unbeknownst to most Luke was interacting with the physical world through astral projections. Luke guided Durango as he administered relief and healing to Claude. When Claude was by himself, Luke worked to stabilize the Atlantean.

It was when @Cassiopeia was actually able to awaken Xander that Luke found himself returning to his physical body and the awaiting exoskeleton. He promptly greeted everyone and then sought some time to himself to analyze his situation.

After aiding LIbertas (and seeing Jude again! Swoon!), Alenysturathe flew off into the sunset. Her father was still out there somewhere, terrorizing innocents. No one knows if they ever met, and what the result of that meeting was, or if she will return to the Legion. But there have been some reports of a flamewind dragon traveling the west with a mysterious techno-wizard in some kind of strange, almost alive, beat up old pre-Rifts pickup that seems held together only by hatred and vengeance for evil.

((Setting the Record Straight - Life After the 77th))
-Written by Luke & Cass off board

Set after Claude's debrief and before anyone heads out to help the 13th.

Cass took another sip from the hot drink in her hands. She was standing in the doorway looking out the open end of the passageway to the communications spire. The snow had slacked off to just a few hard white granules blowing past. The sky was still overcast, but she could see the spire from the relative protection of the tunnel instead of out in the snow. This was the best humanity could do for her people. Her own clan had been the source of the betrayal. The look on Antipas’s face when he’d held the signet ring must have mirrored her own. Shock, confusion and anger. And now there was nothing more they could do. The warning had been sent and the battle would no doubt take place without them. What was she to do now?

She tossed back the last of her drink. Cold now, like her fingers. There was still the wasting disease, and Luke. Luke, who finally had the answers he’d been searching for for as long as she’d known him… Ten years longer, if one added in the time she’d been tanked. He’d asked for space, and she’d given it. Now though. Now she needed advice and answers on things he was an expert on. Perhaps they could work together, now that they had his missing piece, to save both of them.

Cass made her way back down the hallways, touching screens and nodes as she moved, until she found the trace she was looking for. Luke’s impromptu lab/workshop. She knocked and leaned on the wall as she waited for him to answer.

She starts speaking before he does, partially to herself. "I’m lost here. So many things have happened. Worlds have moved on while others have stayed the same. I don’t know where to start to catch up. I’ve been reading the legionnaire annual reports. For as much as the admins like their paperwork, the reports can be a little light on details. The names though. The names start off familiar, then one by one they move to the In Memoriam list and new names fill the active portions. Then those begin to move to the list at the end as well. It’s depressing, frankly."

It was not long, Luke heard Cass talking on the other side of the double doors. Strolling around from the lab tables and work benches, he strode unhindered by the Wasting Disease. He looked like a hundred year old In’Valian instead of being nearly six hundred years old. Xander, his power armor’s AI, was comfortably manipulating some microscope on one of the counters.

Her face lights up with a bright smile when he appears. He looks so much better than he did in the snow. One hand moves as if to touch his face, but she seems to catch herself and sticks then hand back down in her pocket.

"Cass, it is the frailty of the Earth species. Great potential in a short life span."

"It was the humans of Earth that provided the key to disabling the Wasting Disease in you."

"Atlanteans and humans are fairly close genetically. A few changes in the genetic markers and we had a cure for the Atlantean version of the Wasting Disease."

"I would like to know though, if Lady Glittersparkles and Deather Dealer Parsons contracted the Wasting Disease from that Bio-Wizard contraption we encountered prior to Shamlin."

Looking to Cass, while he stands in the doorway with both pocket doors slid completely back, he realizes he was rambling on about things that occured before she joined the 77th.

"Sorry Cass. Curiosity rendered the Salvanian long tailed species extinct. It may prove to be my next great challenge."

She chuckles and steps into the room, this time raising a hand to put it on his arm as she moves past him. "If you stopped looking for answers and chasing knowledge, I don’t think I would know who you were anymore. You look great, by the way." She finds a clear spot on a work bench and hops up to sit on it.

"But curiosity is mostly why I came to see you. You disabled the wasting disease in me, in an Atlantean, but did you cure it? What if other Atlanteans have it or the other two people you mentioned? Should we not try to spread the treatment as quickly as the splugorth have been spreading the disease? And what about the In’Valian? Can you use me to help your people? Can I help with the research or treatment delivery?"

Cass swings her legs and ducks her head, self-conscious over her flood of questions. "That’s a lot, I know. I’ve just never felt at such loose ends. Usually I’ve got a mission, a plan, a task that needs doing."

Luke pats Cass’s thigh. "No problem. There is lots to do."

He glances at Xander, "I will need to get back in the exoskeleton. Someone will need to do the precision work when I am suited up."

Walking over to a monitor hanging on the wall opposite the door.

"Near as I can tell, the Splurgoth got a hold of you first. You were their test subject. The squids were hasty and didn’t bother to follow through. If this had been of Gene Splicer design, the alterations and ailments would have been permanent."

"Not entirely certain how Claude found you. You will have to ask him about that."

"Claude put you into the cryotubes in Shamlin. And returned to Refuge to recruit what would be the 77th."

Tapping the screen, the monitor changes to a couple of hand scrawled notes scanned in. "You, dear Cass are raw power. Techno-Wizard or other classification, it would not make a difference. You have access to the raw untapped and unadulterated power of the cosmos."

"We on In’Valia, have none. No ISP. No PPE. No Ley Lines. No Rifts."

"The Disease is essentially the power of the cosmos trying to interact with a neutral life force."

"I don’t know if I can bring the power of the cosmos to planet that has never had it."

Cass slides off the bench and walks over to stand beside Luke, shoulders touching. She leans in to read the handwritten notes on the screen.

"It took Claude ten years and it still feels like blind luck that you and Pas found me."
She turns to look up at him. "But I suppose better late than never."

Taking a deep breath and squinting again at the monitor she wonders out loud, "I know Atlanteans all have access to power of some sort, but far enough back, we come from the same stuff as humans. It is only a flip of some genetic switch that allows some humans to access power and leaves others without. I’m sure you have researched such a thing in your race, but that sort of genetic mapping could take a lifetime."

"Well, we have a few days to work on things. I need to update my gear, but restocking here is a technowizard’s wet dream. You can put me to work on the ‘precision’ work now, unless…"
Cass gives him a grin. "Unless you want to maybe take some down time. There are some really, really nice geothermal baths in the lower levels of this compound."

"Geothermal pools?!?"

"I have been pretty obsessed with this."
Luke waves an arm over the entire lab.

Luke turns back towards Xander. As if reading his thoughts, Xander speaks up. "Claude’s towers are great. I have bypassed the EarthNet Transmit Protocols and silenced a series of digital entities known as A.R.C,H,I.E.."

"I should be able to to start accessing the Three Galaxies Deep Space InfoWebs within the hour."

Luke pats the exoskeleton/android on the shoulder. "Excellent Xander."

"Cass has your direct comm link and could likely carry me back to the lab should the fatigue set in."

When Cass gives a surprised look, Luke pulls up video from the fight above ground that clearly shows Cass lifting and cradling Luke like a little child. "Xander may not have been responding but he certainly was recording."

"Traitor." Cass mutters in Xander’s direction.

"Xander, let me know what your research pulls up or when you crack the next layer of security. Gene Splicers here we come."

With a nod from Xander, Luke puts his hand in the small of Cass’s back and escorts her through the double doors, which he pulls shut behind him.

"So which way to these pools?"

Cass grins as she tucks herself up under Luke’s arm, one of hers around his waist. "Right this way, sir."

He spends the days before Claude wakes checking on the team, researching the alleged location of McGregor, and offering advice to the "assessors". "Let the kid be your face. He's an affable sort and a glitterboy pilot, that'll carry a lot of weight."

The news that at least one more of the attackers were clansmen darkens Antipas' already serious demeanor. Filing it away as a problem needing long term investigation he elects to focus on the near term instead. To wit the request for aid from the 13th. While he had intended to retire from the legion Ironheart was relatively close to the area he believed his daughter to be and shit like doomsday robots were his stock and trade. But his plans to avenge the town of Shamlin might have severe repercussions for the Legion.

"I had planned to resign and pursue revenge against Lyboc and his people, free a friend from the CS, and find my daughter. So I doubt the Legion wants to be attached to that but I would be happy to help in an unofficial capacity. Where in Ironheart? Any extended action there would be hard to keep covert. Al and Holly can only be human sized so long, if they're interested in coming." Turning to @Luke and @Cassiopeia "What do you two think, save some folks and Angel, then dispose of a doomsday device?"

"I am certain that this will ALL be in an unofficial capacity. It comes with being disavowed."

Looking up from his work in his underground lab, "I am not certain that even Claude could return to the Legion. I have been able to "assist" his healing and regeneration but right now he can only walk assisted."

"We have a base of operations here. And equipment, gear, and supplies should not be hard to acquire."

"Doomsday device first." @Antipas and @Cassiopeia

"We can repurpose the tech and find our way into Ironheart."

"Ironheart is going to be a small teams operation. Probably three."

"@Antipas I tell you what I told the Sunaj idiots. There are so many species in the known Galaxies, that a device designed for one will not work exactly for another."

"The Dream Machine device we were in at the Shamlin Barn, well it opened up my psychic nueral pathways. I think the In'Valian have been closed off to any connection psychic or arcane for many millenia."

"I not only touched the Astral Plane but I also unlocked a means to bypass and cure the Wasting Disease. Problem is, I do not have the device, so rebuilding is the only option, I have."

Luke goes quite for a moment. "Maybe Deathdealer Parsons or one of the Reformed Daemons would have some information on where the device was purchased or acquired."
