10 Grandma! It's been a while.

Post by Ndreare »

The trip to Granma’s seems a little nervous with more than half your crew taking the opportunity to get off the ship even on this planet. Howard and his men are fascinated by the technology of the ship, but find themselves frustrated that even with Brokner’s explanations of how he used the parts they made and how he worked the repairs, they still could not understand it. His men seem to fit in well with the crew, as they each remain in a human form on the ship giving them a sense of comradery.

Eventually the decision of how to approach the warehouse and factory is something Death Otter is faced with. The ship itself is repaired well enough and the crew under Brokner’s direction with the help of the rescuees that the ship is getting in better shape as time going on. Howard’s men even offer to provide all of the energy needed to fly the ship, saving your own crew the effort.

The ship unable to land on the ice planet and without an away craft is still left to rely on the normally emergency use life pods. But their conditions have been reviewed and they power supplies are verified to have years left in them.

Landing outside the forcefield on the ice planet the crew can easily see the towers on the top of the factory and ships being allowed to come and go through the forcefield somehow. The look of the planet seems as before, but for some reason the giants have little to no interest in the tiny escape pods used for traveling.

Instructions

We are resetting resources here, everyone start with an extra benny for the excellent post in 9.0

Who is going down to Peral 5, how many pods are you taking?
Howard and his crew are willing to leave here if needed or help you secure the ship while you are on the land knowing your crew is new and not yet loyal to you. He assures you that he and his men would have no trouble keeping the crew in line.

2 Catastrophe: Something goes terribly wrong. The GM must decide what, but some ideas are a new and permanent Minor Hindrance, the inability to use powers for several days, or an explosion of some sort. The backlash should be thematic if possible. If the hero tampers with dark forces for his abilities, for example, he might become corrupted or summon something sinister into the world. If he’s a weird scientist the device might explode for 3d6 damage in a Medium Blast Template, or he might develop a Quirk, Phobia, or other “madness.”

3 Backfire: The power succeeds as with a raise but affects a different target with the worst possible results. A bolt hits a random friend, boost Trait increases an enemy’s skill or attribute, etc. If there’s no likely target, he’s Stunned instead. If the power has a Duration other than Instant, it lasts its full term and can only be negated by dispel (the caster can’t voluntarily end it herself).

4–5 Short Circuit: The power fails but the Power Points allocated to it are spent, along with an additional 1d6 Power Points.

6–8 Stunned: The caster is Stunned (see page 106). She subtracts 2 from arcane skill rolls for the rest of the encounter (the penalty remains –2 even if she gets this result again).

9–10 Overload: The character’s synapses crackle and overload with power. He takes 2d6 damage plus the cost of the power in Power Points, including any Power Modifiers the player declared.

11 Fatigue: The character suffers Fatigue.

12 Overcharge: The power draws ambient energy from the air, automatically succeeding against the target with a raise and costing the caster no Power Points!

Zil stretches to his full height and wingspan outside the ship, his claws keeping him lightly anchored to the metal hull.

To his brothers, he sends, Finally! I will escort our new crew down to the planet's surface. Perhaps something interesting will happen down there.

Kal prepares to exit the ship, but stops short and turns to @Death Otter. "You are in charge, and know this person better than I do. What can you tell me of this 'Grandma'? Is she likely to be intimidated by three dragons striding boldly through her gates? Shall we assume our alternate forms? Should one or more of us remain with the ship?" He looks around, confirming @Zilaetheryan is already outside before continuing. "I believe at least one of either myself or @Malaetheryan should accompany Zil. It is best not to let his urges run unchecked should there be matters of delicate handling to address. You understand." He smiles as reassuringly as a dragon can when being diplomatic about draconic tendencies. "I can lend some weight to @Fiona Gladbrooke's already formidable gifts at persuasion and diplomacy. Mal, on the other hand, may be best suited to ward off this person's arcane wiles, if there are any." He begins to look somewhat exasperated with the unknown factors of this endeavor. "I simply should know as much as you can tell me so I can devise a plan. Allocation of resources is important in dealings of business. Is this a neutral party, or are there hidden hostilities to deal with?"

Malaetheryan considers. "I admit, I want to go for purely personal reasons--I'm curious about all of this, especially this woman. She clearly has a great deal of power--the effect you describe her having performed on your former captain would be quite difficult to create."

Sa'maku keeps one eye on their guests as they journey back to Grandma's world. There are always two sides to the story of freedom fighters and the savvy reptilian would prefer to know more before letting his guard down. Back on the ice planet the looks at the young dragons and smiles at their boasting, "This grand mother is old, and shrewd. Bald displays of power will be of little concern to her. If she is as others we encountered like her on Gemini II her power is subtle yet unmatched. Let us retrieve what we came for, make our money and begone. The more we become involved with this creature the more we become entangled in her machinations. This would not serve us well."

Fiona smiles and speaks up. "I agree that we should get the AIs and go. For now. I even think we play dumb to her deception if possible, so a minimal ground team would make us look trusting. It would also minimize losses if she gets frisky." Her normally buoyant tone turns frosty. "But sooner or later she will pay for Ramsons death."

Her tone shifts back and she considers the options. "As it seems Zil it set on going perhaps him, Kal, and myself? But to be honest I'd prefer just Sa'Maku and I. If she doesn't know we have new, draconic team members, why tell her?"

Kal nods as Sa'Maku and Fiona both present their opinions. "I wish to see this Grandma in person. I will have a better grasp of how to counter her if I can assess her strength for myself. If she is as powerful as @Sa’Maku says, then the presence of even three dragons would mean as little to her as one, or none. Even the most powerful must account for one dragon. Three will give her at least something else to chew on, even subconsciously." He grins, a hint of malice in his eyes. "What she fails to account for is our unbridled determination. Let her stew on the things she cannot see. Or let her ignore them. We can use it to our advantage, either way."

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure she won't be impressed by a baby dragon," Death Otter points out. "No offense. Or...offense, I don't know. Whatever."

She stretched her arms out and stood up to stretch her legs as well.

"RUMOR has it she's a dragon herself, you know. Not of the infant persuasion. Or some other big freaking thing that lives basically forever. So here's the deal."

Death Otter pointed at each dragon in turn. "Right now she's got no way to know you're OUT and ABOUT. Living free and fancy. I'd like to keep that FROM her. She's a planner. Planners plan. And the more a planner KNOWS, the better their PLANS. We don't need muscle on this trip. One thing that's clear from her rep: she keeps her deals. This whole thing with Ramson was her trying to make sure we wouldn't live up to the deal, so SHE wouldn't have to. Which means if we do, she will."

"Me, Sam and Fi can go. She already knows we're on the crew. We're not giving anything away."

Kal's eyes narrow, and his jaw sets. "I am inclined..." He stops, takes a deep breath, and starts his thought over. "Your reasoning is valid. While I, too, am a 'planner' I will defer to your knowledge of her in this case, and assume she is better seasoned than I...though I may have some surprises she has not considered." He pauses, then continues, slowly. "Your freeing us has earned you a measure of good will. Logic dictates that we acknowledge your leadership of this craft and crew while we remain a part of it. But make no mistake. We are not children, and we will repay a hundredfold any betrayal for profit. Galaxies will burn out before I relent in exacting a reckoning if we are somehow sold out to this Grandma for your own enrichment."
He smiles, with only the slightest glint of menace in his eyes. "We will ensure the ship remains intact and the crew refrains from any foolhardy insurrections in your absence. Captain."

As the team members discuss the situation on the trip parts of the conversation are overheard by Howard. "If you do not mind I would like to accompany you. I would be interested in meeting this being, we are curious if she is one of the Lords who dominated our planet before banishing us to this strange cosmos we are trapped in now. If she is, we will help you in your plots before going on to our world."

Still unsure about Howard and his group Sa'Maku plays it cautiously, "In the marines we had an operational principle that less is more. The more complicated an operation the more points of potential failure. I believe adding all our new friends in the mix will serve to either upset grandmother or give her new threads to pull on. Let us conclude our business and try to extricate from her web."

Zil snorts. Sound may not travel in the vacuum of space, but dragons care not for the concerns of science and laugh in the void all the same.

Infants? Did she call us infants, brothers? Bah! Any one of us could tear this heap from the sky and send its litter streaming across the cosmos. Infants, indeed.

But if she, too, is a dragon, perhaps there is something to be gained from all this. Let the crew have their AIs and their money. @Malaetheryan, you can find a way to get this Grandma person off balance. Then you, @Kalaetheryan and I can kill her and take her territory as our own. If it is as well-apportioned as it seems, that will make a fine power base as we seek our revenge. Even an aged wyrm could not defeat the three of us together. Perhaps in time we can use this crew to engineer such a fight, yes?

A grin spreads across Kal's face, though his hotheaded brother can't see it. "Yes, @Zilaetheryan. Yours is a most excellent plan. You spoke wisely when you said in time. In time, this meager crew's relationship with this 'Grandma' can be used to arrange such an overthrow. But let it be on our terms. Let us use this instance to gather more information before we execute this base creature. I would not wish to risk either of you in a blind power grab. Our threefold cord is unbreakable. Let us not jeopardize that."
He stops to acknowledge @Sa'Maku. "Indeed. Too many unknown quantities in an otherwise rote dealing may spoil the arrangement. We will see the remainder of the crew on their way. I promise none will be eaten...unless they deserve it."
He leans over to @Fiona Gladbrooke. "Have any of you a method of scanning and recording the layout of Grandma's abode? If ever we should pass this way again, it will help if we are not walking blindly through an unfamiliar fortress."
With that, he begins looking over the crew roster to determine who will be exiting and who bears more scrutiny as they disembark.

Kal nods at @Fiona Gladbrooke as a menacing grin crosses his face. "Oh, you I like. A creature after my own heart. Good and proper vengeance takes years of planning and execution. I'm very much looking forward to that move." He laughs a particularly frightening draconic belly laugh. "Yes. You are my kind, indeed."
His thoughts turn to his brothers. "This one might be the most dangerous one of the crew. I suggest we ensure she is completely loyal to us, or make sure she is the first one removed. If she were to turn her designs on our territory, she would be more difficult to overcome than the brutes. Still...I like her. She reminds me of...me."

The shuttle lands and the crew is able to get together for heading in to visit Granny. When two nomads begin to approach them. Not wanting to wonder off and leave the shuttle in the presence of to unknowns. They do not look like the normal ice giants populating the planet as one appears to be a small humanoid female, while the other could be nothing other than a vernulian.

Better to meat up with them and ensure they have no hostile or unscrupulous plans for the shuttles.

As Death Otter disembarks from the shuttle she can't help but notice the weird welcoming committee. She surreptitiously checks the charge on her rifle, then walks a few steps out towards them before waving in greeting.

"Hey!" she called out. "It's COOL you wanted to witness the GLORIOUS SPECTACLE of our ship landing, but the shows over now. Bzt."

Otter made shooing gestures. "Go home. No repeat performances. You're creeping the shuttle out."

In her armored suit, it was hard to tell what species she was, exactly, but she looked quite humanoid if a bit skinny...which that unusually designed, sleek black bodysuit showed off to an almost embarrassing degrees. She had on a bland brownish poncho or cloak or something as well, and was armed with a relatively simple looking laser rifle.

As Slrrxvinslrr and Monza crunched across the snow, Monza in her retrofitted old style CS Deadboy Armor (jet black in color) and wearing a black cloak that wiped about in the cold wind she whispered to Slur, “This ought to be interesting. Hopefully we don’t have to kill them all to get off this rock.”

Dragging a large coffin sized black box behind her the Altara woman stopped a moment to remove the CS helmet and clip it to her belt before lifting the obviously heavy box and continuing closer to the ship. The quick stop has afforded Monza the chance to stealthily unclip a few straps on the large sword at her waist making it readily available to pull. She’d noticed the woman checking her, at the ready, rifle.

As they came closer and Death Otter finished talking Monza stopped. Set the large box down. Rested her hands at her hips and looked straight at Death Otter. Short blond hair whipped about like her cloak and empty white eyes (universally known as Warrior Woman eyes) “looked” at the ship and her crew.

”I am impressed by your landing. Not only because it means I can get off this stupid planet, but also because it is a nice ship. I would love to interface with it and fly it across the three galaxies and maybe hunt down a few people that revenge calls upon.”

The warrior woman smiles and points at her companion then herself.

”This galant fellow here is a powerful knight and a good friend of mine, Slur. My name is Monza Lena. We were part of a crew working for Slip. The Slip from Center. We got left behind on the last mission. Is your crew in need of anyone? I’m tired of being cold. So sick of it in fact that even if you and your crew are Space fisherwoman I’ll still sign on. Pirates? Cargo haulers? Pleasure ship? Whatever it is, your being here likely means your crew and Slur and I would get a long. Unless that is if you are slaves of a Spoogie.”

"Oh so you're desperate," Otter chortled. "That is absolutely the best way to start negotiating."

She did a twirl on her heel, ending with her hands extended towards the shuttle in a sort of 'presenting' gesture. "Lets say, for the sake of argument, that our pirate cargo hauling pleasure-fishing ship has openings."

Her arms folded then over her chest.

"Sell yourselves. What are you bringing to the table? Other than completely justified sploogie-hate and vintage fascist Earth armor?"

“I see you appreciate honesty.... so it’s a negotiation? I was thinking I was trying to be polite. My first thought was to take the ship.”

She chuckles.

“But Slur keeps telling me to try being nice. He’s always saying, why did you have to blow everyone up?”

Kicking the black box Monza smiles.

“I like demolitions. Big boom. Okay. Sell myself - a term as a former slave I don’t care for - but okay. I killed a shite ton of Splougourth to escape with one of their oh so valuable blades and my life. You recognize my modified armor which means you know that when I say I got off that damned planet and got to the three galaxies on my own, you know that can be a feat. The armor was taken from a bunch of those asshats who tried to kill me.”

Grinning she goes on.

“So we’ve established I am a killer. Let’s see. Oh.”

Tentacles slither out of her mouth as some bio parasite creature curls around her neck and wriggles about.

As it slurps back into her mouth and disappears from sight she giggles.

“I’m the sexiest blind pilot this side of forever. But my best quality is I’m friends with this fellow.”

Monza points are Slur with her thumb.

“I like you. You remind me of my sisters. I don’t miss Earth. Do you? So. Instead of just taking the ship. We’d like to join you. Whatcha say sister?”

"Politeness is for suckers," Death Otter replies. "And we're all killers here."

With a gesture at the shuttle she added, "Taking THIS ship wouldn't get you far even if you COULD. It's just an orbital shuttle, you know? You lift off, then flurt around in space for a few hours until life support's exhausted and then...you get to decide if you die up there, or come back down here. Unless, of course, my badass starship hears from me to let us on."

She strolls forward, looking Monza and Slur over.

"Still. Demolitions has its place. And you are pretty hot. Hard to steer wrong with that."

Otter then looked at Slur directly. "Okay, so what's your deal? And don't say 'tentacles' because I can SEE the tentacles."

Slur, on the other hand, kept quiet long enough for Monza to get the ice (hehehe) broken, and introduce herself. He nods along at her remarks.

Be nice to people? Nod.

Blowing stuff up? Disapproving headshake.

Killed Splugorth? Nod.

Tough enough to get to the Three Galaxies? Nod.

Killed people who tried to kill her? Nod.

Sexiness? Shrug.

Friends with Slur? Nod.

"To put it succinctly: We work hard, pull our weight, and if it works out we'll make a strong addition to your crew." Slur chimes in, smiling with those weird human-like teeth Vernulians have. "If not we'll be grateful for the ride and get out of your hair, hopefully somewhere closer to settling up with those that left us here."

"As for me... I haven't eaten anyone."

"Today."

There's a pause, then Slur decides not to leave it right there on the joke and says, "I am also a competent healer and I can fight and shoot." His armor may be recognizable as belonging to a group of right terrible kreeghor mystic warriors, though the color scheme suggests he isn't with that batch. An offshoot, or it's stolen. But it looks really nice for being stolen.

Death Otter rocks back on her heels a little and affects a 'thinking' pose with her fist under her chin.

"So. Straight worm. Crooked girl. Violent and sassy, calm and possibly a cannibal."

She paused, then added to Slur, "Not gonna lie, also kinda hot albeit in a very different way."

"...so yeah. Lets do it. Get your crap on the shuttle. Standard employment...cut of the loot, food, cabin, et cetera et cetera. Shipboard discipline; fights are ok but no killing or damage to ship. If you're too much of a pain to deal with, we'll offload you. Blah blah. What's in the box, by the way?"

”As I said. My best quality is I’m friends with the healer.”

Placing her hand on a bio sensor on the black box it clicks and unlocks. Standing up Monza uses her foot to kick open the top hatch. The box is full of weapons and an excessive amount of explosives.

”I’d love to blow someone or something up for you. In exchange for a ride off this rock or possibly joining your crew of killers.”

Closing the box of death Monza looks at Death Otter with the sexiest look she can muster.

“Thank you. Glad to be part of the brouhaha. Y’all have names I assume?”

Holding out her hand, ”As I said. Monza.”

There's a tentacle available if anyone's interested in wobbling the thing, but it's not like Slur is sorely pressed for such pleasantries.

"Slrrxvinslrr - most just call me Slur." saith the Vernulian, then with a faux-wary eye on Monza, "It's not quite a fetish, blowing things up, but I find it best to keep an eye on her all the same. Never know when you'll find the wrong kind of..." His expression twists as he struggles with the word, and looks directly at Monza this time, "...was it a pod-apple, you called it? In the fruit salad."

Death Otter perused the weapons and bombs right up until Monza closed the case again. When the Altaran offered a hand to shake, Otter gave it a wiggle, then said, "Death Otter is the closest translation for my name in this language."

"In my native language? It also means Death Otter. So the translation is pretty good."

She then grasped Slur's offered tentacle and waggled it for a second before letting go.

"Okay! Me and my crew are here on business...oh, right."

Otter looked back to spot Sa'Maku and Fiona politely waiting for their introductions.

"The totally ordinary gal is Fiona, and the giant murdermachine is Sa'Maku. You can call him Sam. He hates it, but you can call him that. It's up to you."

"We're here on business. Oh, OH! So, like, THIS will be your sort of...uh...your TUTORIAL. You know, like press up arrow to move? Only in this case, it's 'help your new crew get a thing done.' And you level up into crew at the end, if you do a good job. SO! Monza, Slur, Imma put you in security, so you are with Sa'Maku. Do what he tells ya to, unless it's dumb, then tell me about it...and probably still have to do it, but WHO KNOWS. Fiona is our diplomat-slash-spy-slash-you're-not-cleared-for-that. I'm in charge because...REASONS."

She gestured at the shuttle.

"Get anything you can't strap on your backs in there, and we'll get started."

Monza grins at Slur and shrugs.

Letting the empath in her open up carefully Monza “eyes” Fiona.

“She seems exceptionally more than just ordinary - but fine. Hello Fiona.”

Turning her attention to Sa’Maku the warrior woman grins, “Sa...mmmaku. You look fun.”

Grabbing up her black box Monza says, ”Thank you Death Otter. I’ll store this in the shuttle and gather up some toys from it for the trip. Glad to be part of the fun.”

Monza drags the heavy box aboard and gets prepared quickly.

About the only thing Slur would drop off his the survival kit, but he's sort of doubtful about that one. Otherwise, he travels light enough that he can get by without having to leave much - if anything - behind.

He does, however, accompany Monza up into the shuttle. Protective, perhaps? While there he greets both Fiona and Sa'Maku with a nod and, "Hello to you both."

"So follow the chain of command, and if we have a gripe follow it anyway and take it up the chain later. I can live with that." Slur replies to Death Otter's instructions about their security detail. He has a pike and a pistol for weaponry, along with some spikes on his armor if he gets desperate. Assuming he doesn't have any other tricks up his sleeves, that is.

As negotiation and introductions are being made Fi is carefully studying the newcomers physically and "psionically", not in any intrusive way just skimming emotional output. To Death Otter she says, "They don't seem like they're about to rip us off or are up to anything aside from immediate survival. I could get more with a mind probe but that would be rude."

Fiona then smiles radiantly despite a little chattering of teeth and shakes appendages with both. "A pleasure. Abandoned by Slip you say.. We're acquainted with with the crew of the Pursuit." Her tone when she says acquainted leave no doubt the association is not positive.

"Of course, I encourage a healthy skepticism, but I would be most reluctant to hold any intent that would incline a lady such as yourself to be rude." Slurr responds to Fiona with a respectful tone. "I again thank you on behalf of us both, and assume by that tone you have no entanglements with the Pursuit that might prevent us from... expressing our disappointment with her captain?"

He looks to Monza then, to see if she is ready to depart with Death Otter on whatever task the latter has for them.

"I am extremely fun," Sa'Maku replies with deadpan tone. He spends most of the time trying process what Death Otter is saying. The words are all Trade IV but they are used in such bizarre combinations.

Finally he determines they have new crew members. I one called Slur was a reptilian, so that was a plus. The other one was a former slave, and so was welcome in Sa's mind.
