The Bleak Tome - Amity

Post by Snake Eyes »

The 12th sets about their respective tasks, with half of the crew diving headlong into the formidable library of the Collegiate Arcane. The discovery of Amity is fortuitous. Most records of that world have been forgotten. Even Lazlo has few resources that mention the place. The danger of being stranded on a planet that unleashes world-ending storms on a daily basis is enough to turn off even the most intrepid prospectors and treasure hunters from what is, by all accounts, a trove of mineral and arcane resources abundant enough to change the face of Rifts Earth. Still, it is preferable to carrying a world-consuming entity in the pages of a terrible tome.

At midnight, @Pahi Oki finds himself at the hot spring surrounded by a score of seasoned warlocks, with Eloros the Scribe at the front. A complex ritual wrangling powerful elemental forces causes the hot springs to churn alternately boiling and freezing, yet never causing the fusionist more than slight discomfort. At the peak of the ritual, Pahi's sight goes dark. He sinks beneath the pool, opens his eyes, and sees a vision of absolute horror as the face of the avatar of death is revealed to him. The fright overwhelms him and he gasps while beneath the surface. In a flash, he is pulled into the elemental plane. The place where his body was leaves a vacuum, causing a thunderclap when the waters rush to fill the void. Eloros' face turns ghost pale, but even the chief warlock is unable to reach beyond to find the First Nation man.

@Alex is stunned by the sudden disappearance of Nixie. He looks frantically for the city rat for a minute or two, but the realization hits him before long. She's gone. Dejected, he returns to the college and collects his abandoned power armor. Upon running the power-up sequence, he is immediately bombarded by the rhythmic thump of cyber-electronica in his audio feed. He recognizes it almost immediately as a dance remix of the Drei Marbles Left hit, "I'll Never Forget...What Was Your Name?" His heads-up display scrolls a message in binary code: "Hey, hot stuff. You're too good for me. I'm no hero. I'm ghosting before something goes down. Maybe I'll catch you another time." The message stops, and a screenshot of a Space Invaders high score pops up. The top 3 scores:

1ST  105,510   NIX
2ND  102,100  LVS
3RD  99,820    ALX

The following day nets new information on Amity as the 12th continues their scholarly endeavors. Even @Kidemonas gets in on the action, everyone learning as much as they can about their eventual destination. @Everett Jackson and @Marten spend their time in the restaurants, sampling as much food as they can jam into their faces. @Adriana, fed up with the city, hits the countryside to wander a bit. The walls of MercTown are too confining. She takes comfort in the wild, recharging her spirit in anticipation of the strange world she's soon to find.

A few days pass, and the 12th reconvenes for their chosen time of departure. Menelaus Clotho and Eloros the Scribe meet you in a lab on the campus running under the ley line. Eloros presents you with the ill news - Pahi Oki vanished in the elementalist ritual. "I don't believe the ritual claimed his life, but the elemental plane at least claimed his body. I was unable to bring him back, or even to reach him."
Clotho shakes his head vigorously as if trying to shake the misfortune from his thoughts. "We have little choice but to proceed. I will search for him another time." He turns to @Dominic Skodati. "Have you the book? Is everything ready?!" He hands a pack of notes to @Gaspard Gillead and a datastick to @Heather Todd. "Notes on the ritual of summoning the entity, the return, and the ritual of sealing the rift."

Each member of the 12th, as well as Clotho and Eloros, take up a position around a mystic focus placed in the middle of the room. With a low murmur, the incantation begins. First with Clotho, then the Scribe. One by one, the mystically inclined members of the 12th add their arcane skills, and the remaining members of the 12th add their own psychic wills to the spell. With a crackle and a pop, a portal opens.
Amity 10.jpg
On the other side is a desolate world. The planet is a wasteland. Remnants of cities ravaged by time and neglect are visible, interspersed with areas of vast, empty desert. Hints of the greatness of the long-dead civilization are still seen, though nothing can withstand the inevitable march of time.
Clotho's chanting begins to escalate in intensity. Eloros peers through the rift. "The environment is inhospitable at best. The elements are out of balance here. The longer you stay, the worse your going will be. And that is nothing to say of the Nihil Storms. You must hurry! Undo the Book. Save the megaverse!" As a parting gift, the warlock imbues those of the 12th without EBA armor a single casting of Environmental Protection, giving you an hour of protection against harsh environments.

Stepping through the rift, you find yourself standing in sand. The energy of this place is oppressive. Those who are mystically or psionically inclined immediately feel the silent echoes of a race that obliterated itself. You also feel chaotic surges and ebbs of power. With a little exertion, you could use this to amplify your power. Those who aren't so inclined can still feel an almost claustrophobic air, as if the world is crushing in on you.
What passes for a sun here is choked in a sandy haze. Rocks jut from the landscape like jagged stone teeth. The wind drives sand and grit into the joints of your armor and folds of your clothing.

Whether it be curiosity, greed, or simply the desire to get the job done and get out of there, you decide to move. Your compasses seem to indicate north and south poles. The crags in those directions would make your going both slow and dangerous. To the west, the path wanders into a canyon. Eastward, the land flattens out.
Instructions
Several rolls for your environment are required.
Everyone without EBA will make a Vigor roll after your 2nd hour here. (You do NOT need to roll yet. Just be aware.) The environment is oppressive and your oxygen is low. Failure is a level of fatigue. Crit fail is 2. This may be restored with Relief or abated with additional castings of Environmental Protection.
Next: Occult roll at no penalty, or Science roll at -2.
Using magic or psionic powers will accelerate the feedback loop that triggers the magic or psionic waves. The higher rank of power used, the more it triggers the feedback.

Those with AB: Magic or Psionics may make a Spellcasting or Psionics roll at -2. Success means you act as if you're on a ley line for the duration of your stay. A raise means you act as if you're on a Nexus, and you double your available PPE/ISP. Failure cuts damages and durations of your powers in half while you're here. Crit fail cuts your damage and durations in half, as well as your available PPE/ISP for the duration of your stay, and accelerates the feedback loop, shortening the amount of time before a magic or psionic wave, or a Nihil Storm. AB: Miracles, Gifted, or Weird Science are unaffected.
Last: someone roll Survival to navigate somewhere useful. Success and you find someplace awesome. Raise and you find someplace awesome even faster. Support is an option, +2 max per PC, +4 max total.
OR: if you all prefer, fire up the ritual and let's get this over with, leaving Amity un-looted.
Nihil Storms and your eventual destruction
Your timing is impeccable. You have arrived just after one of the power storms blew through your area. You have a certain amount of time before another wave sweeps across the world. This span can be shortened by your own activities. This will be tracked by card draw. Clubs are bad. The other suits are irrelevant. Jokers are good. You have 10 clubs before a wave. Every hour that goes by, I draw one card. Use a power of Novice or Seasoned rank, I draw one card. Use a Veteran or Heroic power, I draw two. Draw a joker and it backs the club count down by one and reshuffles the deck. Crit fail on a power usage or on the Spellcasting/Psionics arrival roll automatically adds a club and draws two more cards.
On the 10th club, I roll a simple 1-3. A 1 is a Magic wave that will do 1-4 wounds to anyone with AB: Psionics. 2 is a Psionic wave that does 1-4 wounds to anyone with AB: Magic. 3 is a Nihil storm that will instantly kill everyone, close the rift, and seal your sorry corpses here for eternity. Everyone will be able to get a sense of an impending wave or Nihil Storm.
Beware the mesmerizing eyes of the snake!

Dom is at once amazed and disappointed. The environment is much too hostile to bring back more than a handful of gantrium. Worse they were about to unleash death, making the place even more inhospitable. His initial greed pushed aside he begins to sense the environment around him and its not good, while he can feel the surge of mystic power in the air he can tell its wild and unstable, like a ley line during a storm.

"The storms will be magnified each time we use magic or mental powers. Be sparring.

Heather took the data stick and plugged it into her computer, studying the ritual and how best she could help. She didn’t have arcane power, but she could use her psionic abilities to bolster the others.

Heather couldn’t help but gasp as she saw the world through the portal. Words in books hadn’t done this desolate sphere justice. Heather stepped through the portal and was immediately hit by the ebbs and flows of psionic power on the planet. She took a moment to acclimate herself to the sensation, finding the psychic resonance of the planet exceedingly reactive to her mind.

Heather reached out with her mind to see if she could use the psychic confluences to help find a good spot for the ritual. “That direction might be good,” she indicated.

Sure the 12th had stepped into a real shit storm. But, Alex in his large super trooper PA was busy trying to put together what could be the biggest mystery of his life. Who is LVS? He might have missed the whole trip to Amnity had not been for @Adriana’s comment about a Nexus that according to his sensors was not there. The Power Armor sort of shrugged and slide over to her.
Alex turned down the volume some but a loud speaker was a loud speaker.

To @Adriana he asked perhaps the most important question of his young life, “Hey Adriana, seeing how you’re a girl... I have a friend who had his girl friend umm dump him. She told him “He was too good for her.” Then split. Umm, what does that even mean? To good for her...”

Gaspard is a bit dizzy from the surge of arcane power he experiences as they step through, and so fails to recognize the danger of the place, though he nods in understanding when Dominic describes it.

As his head clears, he begins looking over the desolate landscape they find themselves in. "I would recommend using the ruins of the old cities, rather than the wastelands. We will be more likely to find some salvage, and also the ritual will work better there." He doesn't explain that this is because more people would have died in population centers during the cataclysm.

Everett uses his strength, size and mobility to scout ahead, clear debris and otherwise help as needed. There's not much here he can do until a threat shows up, so he makes himself useful when the opportunity presents itself. Balitrox is strangely silent from where he's secured to Everett's back. It doesn't seem like it wants to risk Everett's ire because this is the last place it would want to be stranded.
Everett Jackson, Titan Juicer
Everett, Human Titan Juicer
Pace: 10(d8); Parry: 8(1) Toughness: 24(9)
  • Uncanny Reflexes: Juicer reflexes are superhuman, granting them −2 to be hit by any attack they are aware of and +2 on Evasion rolls.
Note: Neither Quick nor Uncanny Reflexes apply on the first round of an unexpected combat/high-stress situation.
Combat-Relevant Edges & Abilities:
  • Ravenous Abandon (Berserk): Per the Berserk Edge, Everett can flip the switch and give partial control over his actions to the Reaver of Essence. This comes at a cost - ending Balitrox's berserking rage is not an option until its hunger has been sated by the blood of a wielder of arcane power
  • Charge: She may ignore the penalty for Running when making a Fighting attack at the end of her movement.
    • Overrun: If he moves at least one inch beyond his normal Pace before making any Fighting attacks, the hero adds +2 to the damage rolls. Any target Shaken by such an attack is knocked prone.
  • Drug-induced Euphoria/Tranquility: In order to keep the Juicer from burning out over a matter of days, the bio-comp constantly supplies a combination of psychotropic drugs and chemical inhibitors to keep him happy and calm. Juicers live in a state somewhere between mildly ecstatic and stoned, which causes −1 to all Smarts or Smarts-linked skill rolls in non-combat or low stress situations. On the first round of an unexpected combat or high-stress situation, the Juicer doesn’t gain the benefits of Uncanny Reflexes or Quick.
  • Frenzy: A character with Frenzy rolls a second Fighting die with any one of his Fighting attacks for the turn. The extra die may be allocated to the same or different targets as he sees fit. Resolve each separately.
  • Internal Repair System: As an action, the Juicer can make a natural healing roll at +2 to heal Wounds; this costs one charge.
  • Level Headed: Draw an additional Action Card each round in combat and choose which one to use.
  • Multi-Optic Helmet: It includes a targeting sight, magnification, thermal, infrared, ultraviolet, and night optics. The wearer ignores Illumination penalties, gains +2 to sight-based Notice checks or to offset Range penalties, and +1 Shooting with calibrated weapons. The helmet includes a hands-free radio (10-mile range) and megaphone voice-projection system.
  • Quick: Whenever you are dealt an Action Card of Five or lower, you may discard it and draw again until you get a card higher than Five.
  • Size +2
  • Split the Seconds: Juicers and Crazies often find themselves living between the ticks of the clock. This Edge allows them to ignore 2 points of Multi-Action penalties each turn (they can perform two actions at no penalty or three at −2 each).
  • Super Endurance: They require only half the normal amount of sleep and gain +2 on all Fatigue checks.
  • Trademark Weapon, Improved: +2 to Fighting with Balitrox and +2 Parry when Balitrox is readied.
Wounds: 0/3; Fatigue: 0/2; Balitrox's PPE: 5/5
Bennies: 4/3; Internal Repair System: 3/3
Burn: 6/8

Kidemonas looks around. "Man, this place is bad. My friend Savant told me of worlds like this. But honestly this is the only world other than earth I had ever been to. I do not think I like it."

Kidemonas sets to work, helping to pulverize stones, throw them out of the way, or do whatever efforts are needed. He tries to figure out what all is needed, but find he needs direction from the others to really be useful and get efforts going. The missive amounts of power here is enjoyable, but the depressing and oppressive atmosphere does not fit well with his heroic and amazing image.

The place is amazing. Magic power and wealth beyond measure. Why couldn't we lock the avatar of death on the home world of D'Norr?

Following his guides, Dom uses his ley line senses to reach out and scan for nearby places of power. It doesn't take long before one lights up like the neon sign of a brothel in the 'Burbs. Smiling broadly the rift runner points on the horizon.

"I think I found us a spot for this picnic."

The land is bleak. The world is stripped of life. In addition to the powerful ebbs and flows of mystic and psionic power, harsh winds sweep the land. Most of the crew has sealed armor, and the rest are protected for now by arcane elemental protection. Still, the world wears at your soul. It feels inhospitable.
@Dominic Skodati, then, wastes no time in feeling out what's nearby. Guided by @Heather Todd, @Gaspard Gillead, and @Marten, the Rift Runner gets the group pointed in the right direction. They even manage to get a sense of geography in short order, finding shortcuts and ducking dead ends. After maybe an hour, the crags and jagged hills give way to flat ground. A brutal gale-force wind rips across your vision. It passes after just a moment, but left in its wake is the first close-up sight of something other than pure desolation.
Amity tower entrance.jpg
The whole world is a power echo chamber. This place is pinging on overdrive.
As you approach the entrance, the ground goes from barren dirt to a layer of sand over worked roads. You notice, too, evidence that people did die here. In droves.
Scattered at your feet are humanoid skeletons. Any flesh that would have clung to them has long since been decayed and cast about by the vicious winds. Even the bones themselves are ground down by the unrelenting elements. Skulls and spines remain, though most are chewed nearly through by years upon years of constant sandblasting. There are easily a hundred dead bodies here.
The entrance yawns before you. The door is closed.

Amity/Ruins
Morning
Round 0

“Let’s see if we can get out of this wind!” Heather yelled over the comms as they stared ahead at the manmade structure. “We’ll be able to concentrate on the ritual better.” She stepped carefully over the bones as she approached the doors. She extended her hand and gave a bit of a telekinetic tug to see if they were open and would let them inside.

A tower, dead bodies. Awesome.

Letting the others go first Dom prepares his mystic sight, not so much cause he wants to see whatever evil lurks but because it beat the hell out of a jump scare later. Trudging along he mutters something incoherent and scans the landscape with his magical senses...his gaze lingering on the skulls and spines.

The doors are closed but any locking mechanism has long since failed. They open haltingly, with a massive shriek of grinding metal announcing to anyone around for miles that you are here. The haze of the dust-choked sunlight gives way to an immaculately clean and surprisingly well lit cavern. The entry is large; over 60' high, and twice as wide. Off to the left, you see the cavern taper to a larger door. To the right is the same, ending in double doors. Straight into the cavern is a massive double door, almost as high as the cavern itself.
An investigation of the door to the left uncovers what appears to have been a barracks of some type. There are rooms of bunks, a common area with tables, and a kitchen. The most disturbing thing, though, is the whole section is littered with long desiccated bodies. Time has done its work on the flesh of these people. What remains are bones, solid items, and several gemstones. These fit the description provided by Gaspard as the powered gems used by the Shlaes as magical or psionic foci.
Opening the doors to the right, you find what you believe to be a control and supply room. Scattered across the floor of the supply area are a host of tools that look like they would be used in a mining operation. The control room contains an assortment of flat panels made of crystal and the remains of some kind of wiring long since decayed. Writing in an alien language is etched at the top of each panel. You find, also, a few dead bodies in various positions; some in seats in front of the panels, others mixed in with the tools on the supply room floor. A small number of the same gemstones are found amidst the litter here as well.
If you have some method of translating the writing, roll the appropriate skill or power and I'll PM you what you read.

The doors to the back of the entry cavern are not easily opened and will require effort on your part.
Time Passes - Card Draw
8 of Clubs. 1/10 Clubs drawn. Remember that any use of Magic or Psionics powers will trigger card draws, as does the passage of time.
Picking the bodies
Picking the bodies of the dead for their focus stones is easy. Finding something useful to you is going to take time. As you sift through the stones, you find many of them were damaged when their possessor died, or in any of the subsequent Nihil Storms that have ravaged the world since. Anyone with Magic or Psionics ABs, roll your appropriate power use skill to attune to a stone. Success and you find a gem with a 5 PPE/ISP reservoir and a power of Novice rank. Each raise adds 5 PPE/ISP to the reservoir and increases the rank of the power by 1.
Want to cheat? Cast Detect Arcana. Every success and raise on Detect Arcana adds another 5 PPE/ISP and power rank to the gem you find with your Spellcasting / Psionics roll. Or, if you prefer multiple gems, each raise on Spellcasting / Psionics finds an additional, functional gem with a 5 PPE/ISP reservoir and a Novice power embedded.
(Notes: You may only use one gem of each type, whether spellcasting or psionics. You MAY have one of each in use if you can use both ABs.
Additional Notes: Using Detect Arcana does not find additional stones. It only increases the power of the stone you find. You may cast Detect Arcana once on each stone you find. Keep track of your power points, and keep in mind that every use triggers a card draw.)
Do you have the Faith AB, or no AB at all? Your options are as follows:
1) Gemstones for fun and profit: roll your Occult skill at -2, or Smarts at -4. Rules apply as above, but you get to pick whether it's a magic or psionics stone. Give it to your compatriots or sell it.
2) Go open the big door. That will take 4 total successes among the following skills: Repair, Weird Science, Strength, Spellcasting or Psionics, each at -2.
3) Come up with something else.

It's a concern. What if whatever happened comes back? Still, ooo crystals feel interesting. She grabs a couple and studies them, focusing on them for a bit.

Not really prone to that hogwash about psionics or magics, the young broken hearted lad clambered over to the door with renewed curiosity. Finally their was an enigma to replace his feelings for a girl. He called out into the chamber piping his excited words through his Supertroopers PA system, “I am going to check this door out folks! I have been waiting to use my enhanced mass spect reader, I should hopefully be able to what this door has been used for... Hang tight.”

It did not matter that @Dominic Skodati was an ass, @Marten was just there, or that @Heather Todd had betrayed him. For now he had forgotton that @Everett Jackson was a monster, and that @Adriana had given some sage advice. Heck the kid even forgot that @Gaspard Gillead was a devil man. All that really mattered was unraveling this doors secrets.

But of course he did not forget his new friend, because like the door he was a new shiny thing. He waved over at @Kidemonas ”Common man, lets check this wicked cool door out.”
Weird Science 12 includes the -4, object read with strong (from the moment of creation), Not sure if this works for opening the door too... But he would spend a couple of hours learning about the door and its surroundings.
Weird Science Object read with 1d10!1d6!
Success allows the character to see events that occurred within 10 yards up to about five years past. A raise increases this to 100 years and 20 yards. The caster can “fast forward” and “rewind” as desired, skimming about 10 years of history per minute of real time.

When watching an actual event, it occurs in real time, just as if watching a digital video.

MODIFIERS„ „ STRONG (+2): The caster can see or hear from the item's creation forward.

Examining the door and trying his best to figure out what was going on Kidemonas found he was having trouble concentrating. This place was strange and the power rushing into and filling him was distracting. "A door, what door? Want me to rip it open?"

Amity/Ruins
Morning
Round 0

Heather moved with the others to survey the ruin. It appeared inhabited only by corpses, and was safe from the storm outside, and all those crystals! Even Heather got the itch. When Alex raced off toward the remaining, sealed door, she nodded to him. “Yes, take care of that,” she said, a bit distracted as she surveyed the crystals.

Heather closed her eyes and focused, using her power to discern the powers of the stones. Two of them stood out with particular power, and she walked over and plucked them off the corpse, studying them further, a blue sapphire and green emerald. “Powerful,” she murmured, carefully pocketing them in her armor. She would see if she could get Alex to create a necklace or circlet to wear them.

The room was littered with dead bodies but I couldn't see them past the glow of all the gems. They blinded my wizard's sight as they radiated mystic power to varying degrees. It was alluring, and I really wanted farm them all but there wasn't time. Despite the risks I kept by sight up - knowing it could attract the same fate that befell these dead guys but it was worth the risk.

There were some folks in Stormspire who would pay a fortune for these gems, they could create magic items and techno-wizard devices that would be things of legend. But, they weren't here so I rooted around and found something that would make me even more of a legend than I already am.

It was hard.

Picking up a few rocks and turning them over in his hand Dom picks through the corpses like a little old lady at a rummage sale, oblivious to the fact these were once living people. He lines up a couple, frowns, puts one down and picks up another, and examines it curiously. His face is puzzled as he tries to do some calculations.

Finally he settles on a single large gem and pockets it with a devilish smirk.

Kidemonas starts looking around, he knows he should not use his powers here, but the swelling from being so overcharged makes it tempting like no other. Reaching out with his arcane senses and his natural draconic awareness he feels the stones. Finding a stone that sings to him Kidemonas lifts it. The stone are strange, somehow designed that the holder can create structures with his mind. Kidemonas wonders why such a thing would be needed. But he was a dragon and the need to fill his hoard was still a strong instinct for him. Grabbing the stone, he sees there is also a second one on the same corpse, likewise enchanted, this time with the ability to move object with telekinetic force.

The gems that caught Adriana's attention were in rough form, not cut. They had the blemishes removed from the outsides but otherwise were untouched. One of an orange citrine that had the Detect Conceal Arcana Spellcasting power and 5ppe. The other blue topaz with the Relief Psionic power and 10isp. She pockets the pair after a while and looks around some more.

Gaspard, having discovered the nature of the gems in his research, has a very good idea what to look for. Unfortunately, something about the power-surge he experienced earlier is still keeping him a bit heady as they examine the bones for useful gems.

He's about to give up, when he finally manages to locate one to which he can attune. Plucking it up, perhaps a bit too hastily, he reels a bit, then begins babbling for several seconds in a language that hasn't been spoken since the waves of arcane destruction laid waste to the planet.

Dom responds to Kidemonas while getting a dig in at his least favourite D'Norr, "It's pretty normal for Gaspard to sputter nonsense. Although that is a new kind of nonsense. Since he usually just repeats himself over and over again like a senile old man we can probably say its suspicious."

just to be safe, Dom takes a peek at Gaspard with his wizard's sight (detect arcana was already active but I can roll again if the duration has expired).

Card Draws
@Heather Todd (detect arcana): Ace Hearts
@Dominic Skodati (detect arcana): 2 Spades
Gaspard (Speak Language): 8 Hearts
Time: 2 Diamonds
1/10 clubs drawn
The 12th picks through the bodies of long-dead Shlaes. The allure of objects of power overrides even the most honorable reservations about grave robbing. This place is a treasure trove, and everyone who looked found at least something.
@Gaspard Gillead found a touch more than he bargained for. His newfound command of languages (at such a minor cost...right?) yields immediate benefit. The panels in the control room appear to have been viewscreens, assembled using a form of techno-wizardry. The wires, though, are fully decayed and no trace of them can be found. The print on the panels remains, etched permanently. They reference different shafts of the mine in which the arcane anomaly team finds themselves. There are 4 separate panels with empty sockets where some implement would have been placed. 2 are labeled "loader" and 2 are labeled "driller". There is no further reference for what these would have been.
@Alex's mass spectro reader shows him a wealth of information. When you see everything the door has seen since its creation, you could lose yourself for hours...days, even, watching hundreds of years of activity. Time being of the essence though, he takes note of a few major events.
The doors themselves are huge. They have to be, as this mine was dug by magical automatons of impressive size. Two in particular are large enough to make @Kidemonas look diminutive. Alex's scan of the history of these doors shows them entering, one after the other. Those golems have not since passed back through the doors. Unless they left by another route, they are still in the mine. Two more constructs arrived 3 months later. Smaller, though they don't lose much in mass to Kidemonas. These, too, have not departed by way of this door.
A few weeks after the arrival of the second set of constructs, loads of material begin exiting the mine to be loaded onto transports. The containers are always covered. You cannot tell what it is they're mining, but they're mining a lot of it.
The last event of note is the coming of the first Nihil Wave. In the midst of an attack by one faction seeking to seize the mine, you see the very air begin to vibrate...slowly, at first, and then quickly rising to a frenetic pitch. A strange look of panic passes over every face, whether magic user or psionic. An instant later, every Shlaes screams in agony, grasping at their heads or their chests. In unison, they all fall down dead. Alex has just witnessed the violent eradication of an entire race of humanoids, their souls and consciousnesses ripped from their bodies.
At least you know what it takes to open these doors.
Instructions
Alex, roll Spirit -2. Success means you handle it like a pro. It's like watching a war movie. Raise gives you a point of Conviction. Failure bestows a rank of Fatigue that cannot be recovered naturally until you leave Amity. (You may use Powers to recover it at -2.) Crit Fail and you develop a new Minor Hindrance fitting the experience. No matter the result, Alex has figured out what it takes to open the door and can do so at his or the group's leisure.
Do you have EBA or some other resistance to the oppressive environment of Amity? Good for you. If you don't, your ritual casting of Environmental Protection is wearing off. Either beg your friends for a casting of Environmental Protection or roll Vigor vs. Fatigue.
Determine your next course of action. Had enough of Amity? Let's fire up the ritual. Want to see what's behind Giant Door #1? Open sesa-you.

A wealth of info came streaming at the boy, but his armor’s sensors broke it down for him in manageable bits, showing him the important stuff. The kid simply breathed, ”That is Ice... They were miners.” With wealth of info replacing all throughts of woman he opened the doors because, “I gotta find those golems, they are too ice.”

(Short of the doors barring some great evil, he opens them to find the golems inside)

As Alex opens the door, Gaspard moves forward to get his attention. Looking up at the armored form, he motions with a hand to stop. "We should probably at least discuss this a moment, Alex. After all, we don't know when the next wave of destruction will pass." He indicates Heather. "You should at least let our commander know why you want to delay the ritual and go diving into these mines. I'm sure the reason is a good one, at least."

“This is a mine?” Heather asked as the text of the control panels was read. Then she heard the grinding of the great doors being opened and went to investigate with surprise.

“We don’t know what’s behind those doors!” Heather warned.

Kidemonas thinks for a moment. "I mean, would it matter to her? She would just raise the corpses of whatever we kill anyways right. This place needs sanctified by a priest or the result is the same." Kidemonas does not think a priest could sanctify a whole planet, but one could try.

Gaspard considers the issue a bit more. "The more I think about it, Miss @Heather Todd, the more I believe that prudence is on securing at least the nearest parts of the mine. While unlikely to have anyone living, the possibility of automated defenses interrupting the rite is enough to suggest some prepatory exploration."

He looks over at the youth @Alex. "Alex seems to have good instincts on this sort of thing, too. Of course, your decision is what ultimately matters."

Kidemonas prepares to help destroy whatever awaits on the other side of the door. From the looks of the others these doors will be opened and with this group not having a leader to make the calls like the 3rd did then it seems each does as they please. Concentrating for about 10 seconds he then says. "I am ready to kill whatever attacks from the other side."

Practicality says that dead people aren't going to use the objects again so why shouldn't the living take it. When Alex opens the doors her eyes widen. "What if killer beyond doors?" She likes a good fight but something that could annihilate a race isn't likely to be stopped by her.

Alex would have flung the doors open wide prepared to see what was on the otherside... Except @Gaspard Gillead urged caution... The boy sighed regretting having taken Gaspard off his list of people he needed to scratch off. Still Alex, you got to trust one of them right? Yeah Max would have wanted him to trust the shifter... Ok Max, ok... Trust Gaspard. The super trooper halted opening the doors after moving them a couple of inches.

Over the suits PA Alex’s voice echoed across the chamber slightly annoyed but at least willing to listen to wise counsel, “Ok Gaspard... Talk, I know what I saw... A mine with cool automatons we should at least go get some of them before we need to leave.”

Amity/Ruins
Morning
Round 0

Heather sighed. “We’re here to cast that ritual,” she reminded the others. “The longer we stay here, the more likely we are to get caught out by the dangers here.” She rubbed her forehead. “But I suppose now that the door is open, we should make sure nothing dangerous is going to come out and interrupt the ritual. Let’s go.”

Card Draws
Kidemonas (Protection): 7 of Diamonds
Kidemonas (Arcane Protection): Jack of Diamonds
Time: 9 of Spades
1/10 clubs drawn
The 12th, having picked through the bodies, opts to move through the giant doors. With Alex's guidance, he and Kidemonas manage to heave the doors open. Stepping through to the next chamber you find a staging area, a nexus of several shafts. On the other side of a rail opposite the doors yawns a
Amity mine.jpg
containing a huge mining operation. More Shlaes bodies lie scattered around the place, though not as many as were in the entrance. The mine, despite having no outside illumination, still glows with enough light to see clearly. You owe the light to what amounts to a psionic/magical track-lighting of sorts laced all through the hall.

A cursory examination of your options, combined with Gaspard's ability to read the script, shows two active shafts, both off to the right of the entrance. Several other shafts labeled what translates as "TAPPED" sprawl outwards in various directions. On the floor of each shaft is what looks like a double-track system for either magically or psionically operated mining carts. The Shlaes left nothing to pure mechanics, it seems.
At the mouths of the two active shafts, you see several overturned carts. They must have been offloaded prior to the Nihil Wave because they contain no trace of whatever substance was being mined. It's hard to tell from here how deep the shafts go.

Alex, though, aims to find out. "SO ICE!" he cries as the enormity of the place gets the better of him. He moves quickly down the shaft furthest to the right, heedless of the calls of his friends to wait up. The Super Trooper armor enables a fast pace, and Alex makes full use of it. After about thirty seconds, Alex (and anyone who opted to follow him) lay eyes on the front line of the mining operation.

The mineshaft terminates in a fork. The face of each fork appears to have been actively worked by one of the two monstrous automatons still standing at the face. One is purpose-built for the digging out of the mineshafts.
Amity driller.jpg
is at least 60 feet tall.
Amity Loader 00.jpg
is built for loading the mined substance, and is just a bit smaller than Kidemonas. Below the face being worked by the loader are roughly a dozen deceased Shlaes and a variety of shovels, picks, and other tools built for extracting the vein of...gantrium...that lays exposed before you. Those with any knowledge of the substance stop for a moment to stare in awe at a lacework vein of un-mined metal the worth of which, just on the face you see, could bequeath generations of your offspring affluence undreamed of for the next millennium or three.

Instructions:
Make one roll for Notice. If you opt to use Detect Arcana or EDA, roll once as well. Your results are below. Remember that casting DA or EDA will trigger a card draw.
Notice
Not all of the deceased Shlaes scattered before you died of the Nihil Wave. There appears to have been violence. Two bodies lay crushed beneath the feet of the loader.
Notice -2
One of the overturned carts has a lump of gantrium about the size of an apple lying inside. There is also a piece partially dislodged from the wall face you might be able to extract with a little time and tools. Roll Repair at -2 to determine how much you can extract.
Notice -4
The loader and digger both appear to be casting their own glow independent of the lighted mine. You can't tell the source.
Detect Arcana
The loader and digger are both partially charged for use. It may be possible to activate them somehow

For the first time since he arrived on the scene in the shadows of Mordin's lair Dominic is speechless. His cigarette hangs limpy from his mouth as he stands and stares slack jawed at the walls of the mine. A handful of this metal could make him rich, there was enough here to make him something unfathomable. Best part was, they were about to put the best pitbull in place to guard it too. Avatar of death...Dom's brain rolled over the options quickly. How could be build a backdoor to this place that wouldn't literally just be death's door?

Absentmindedly he takes some ore and shoves it in his pockets, backpack, and anything else he can fit it into. Looking at the hauler bot he smiles...despite the two bodies beneath it.

Maybe we can haul out a big load with that thing...two big loads if Kid will pull a cart.

Marten slowly takes it all in, letting out a low whistle. "Damn, Gina." he whispers, as if to himself. Noticing the Machines inner glow, he tries to activate his mind's eye, but it does not work. Perhaps this place is interfering with his abilities, he thinks.

He points at the machinery and says quietly as if he's afraid of drawing some unwanted thing's attention "What's with the glowing?"

Everett nods with his response to @Marten, "Yeah,

. I'm not a magic man like the rest of you, but Bali is raging up a storm inside my head. Well, more so than usual. I'm not sure if its the shiny glowy rocks or the glowy golems, but its probably both to be honest. The closer I get to the rocks or the golems the grumpier it gets. Those things might still be active. I don't think death world nihil conditions finished all of these folks off and the only thing I see around here that might be dangerous are these two glowing golems."

He keeps Bali ready in case the lifeless golems aren't quite lifeless, but he does point out the rocks he sees, "@Dominic Skodati looks like he's about to lose his mind over the shiny rocks. I assume that means they're something good. I see a chunk of it in that cart we can take. From the looks of that vein we might be able to dig some more out over there if we really want to stand around and take the time to do it."

Looking at the golem, Dom smiles.

"Well hello big fella...looks like someone left the engine running."

He stoops down to the two bodies crushed beneath its feet and looks them over, which to others looks a lot like looting dead bodies, "What are the odds they still got the car keys?"

Vaguely aware of Everett blathering in the background Dom waves a dismissive hand, "We take as much as we can. What is in the cart is worth more than you will ever be able to spend in your limited lifetime. I, however, plan to well served in my eventual immortality."

Gaspard takes in the scene before them quickly, nodding as Dominic gets quickly (and predictably) to the business of looting everything not nailed down, then looking for a crowbar to get the rest. "The stone from the cart is fine, and if anyone wants to grab some more loose ore, they should go ahead. But activating that machinery might very well draw the Nihil storms here. If we can dislodge the larger piece without using the automatons, fine, but if not, then I say we leave it where it is and get on with the ritual. Would you concur, Miss @Heather Todd?"

She keeps a careful eye on the loader as she collects some of the ore herself, as much as she can without waking the things or until they wake.

Heather scanned the area around the gantrium vein, looking at the bodies at the feet of the machines. Then she focused and risked activating her ability to see magic. She studied the loaders.

“Gaspard is right. We are on a schedule here,” she reminded the others. “And Adriana is right, too. Those machines aren’t powered down. I don’t think we want to risk waking them up. If you want, take what you can carry in your pockets or pack. Don’t weigh yourself down. You’ll be plenty rich with even just a small piece. If you can wedge out the bigger piece from the wall, fine. But don’t touch the automatons.”

Heather only picked up a small piece of gantrium ore. She was already struggling under the weight of her armor and pack.

She looked over at Gaspard. “What kind of space or location do we need to release and kill this avatar of death?” she asked him. “This mine is protected from the storms on the surface. Is it big enough?”

Kidemonas was eating a few of the smaller gantium stones thinking to recover them later they way he recovered the weapons and parts of the brodkil he had eaten in the past beginning to try at dislodging the large one when he heard the conversation about the golems. "Wasn't the control center back there labeled for controlling them?

"I mean, if we need to use them that would be how. But yeah, it looks like they started killing stuff. So maybe lets let them sit just in case."

At the mention of him towing a cart full of the stuff he thinks that is not such a bad idea. "I think myself and the demon slave over there." indicating Everette with a point of his tail. "Can work out a couple of carts. Then when we get back we can all split the rewards evenly."

Then an idea comes to him. Looking between the two arcane experts he asks @Dominic Skodati and @Gaspard Gillead. "With all this power here and everything else. What will stop this death avatar from just using it to open its own portal to whatever dimension it wants?"

When Kid asks about Death opening its own portal she freezes and looks over at the magic experts. The whole point was to keep it contained. If it could travel wherever it pleased...well, as dangerous as the book is, that seems worse to her. "Can Death open portal?"

Heather pulled the field computer out of her pack and sat down cross legged while the others worked on the gantrium, searching for any answers she could find.

Everett cocks his head to the side not unlike a confused puppy when @Kidemonas skulks off. That is until @Adriana chastises him and his jaw drops as he turns to face the werecat.

"He called me a demon slave first! We're mercenaries, or soldiers, or whatever you want to call us. Its what we do! We bust..I couldnt just let him..." The titan juicer attempts to placate Adriana until he wilts under her gaze, "Fine."

Everett hustles over to the dragon by the vein of ore and offers Kidemonas a proposition, "Alright, buddy. I'm sorry for calling you a big lizard, OK? How about we make this fun. Lets see who can get the most ore out of this wall before we move on!"

The 12th does their due diligence, examining the evidence before them as well as the arcane signatures around them. The outflow of magic and psionics causes a perceptible ripple in your souls. The feeling it leaves is...disconcerting.

@Heather Todd does a quick review on her computer. A cursory scan of the datastick Clotho gave her has details on the rituals of release, return, and to seal the world from the rifts. If their conclusions are accurate, once complete, the ritual of sealing should keep the avatar bound here for eternity. Along with the mountain...the planet of gantrium.

@Dominic Skodati pockets the single nugget of gantrium ore left over in the cart. The rest of the team searches the area, though no significant portions of ore are found. Crumbs and specks at best. If the AAT wants any more of the invaluable ore, they'll have to get it with the sweat of their brow. So Alex follows the lead of @Kidemonas and @Everett Jackson, and begins
Lp1d12!!+4
Ldp1d6!!+4
with the tools at the mine face. He manages to pull out some sizable chunks of stone and ore from the largest exposed vein he can reach. "I think I can get some more..." He is cut off, though, by another (different) ripple of power.

Two, actually.

A low thrum begins to emanate from the loader. You hear, just down the opposite fork where the driller is, a deeper, reverberating hum that causes the floor to vibrate. The excitement in Alex's voice has drained at the ominous rumbling. "I got a bad feeling about this." Proditione glances up at the automaton, then shifts his gaze down to @Gaspard Gillead. A menacing grin slowly spreads across his face.
Instructions
The loader has not moved, but the innate glow has brightened. Minimal (Free Action) movement to look down the other fork of the mineshaft gives you a view of the digger, which also hasn't moved, but the glow is easily visible now.
What are you doing?

"Knew digging would be bad!" She moves to stand protectively in front of Heather to give the other time to get up if the things attack. She keeps watching the loader and the way to the digger from that vantage point, not wanting to be caught off guard if the digger joins them.

Kidemonas sees the new glow and everyone panicking. "Maybe now that we are breaking stuff free, the spells in the golems wants them to move the stuff into carts for extraction and kill us? I say if they come, get out of their way, we do not want to fight those things. I think I could take a couple hits from one, but the rest of you would die pretty easy from one of those." Looking at the demon slave Kidemonas feels a smile inside as he is certain to include the Titan in the comment.

Kidemonas eyes the lycanthrope suspiciously. Why would she say it like that when he already agreed to avoid the fight? Was she trying to establish dominance over him? The humans liked to run around with a hierarchy, but she was werecat and their rules may be different. Kidemonas considers changing his position or maybe even just picking a fight with the thing out of spite.

Then a less impulsive part of him decides not to risk everyone getting hurt over nothing. After all how can he be a protector and hero if he does things that gets people hurt out of spite. Then again thinking about it he realized she likely just wanted his attention on her. He was the most handsome and powerful member of the team. Satisfied within himself he feels better realizing what was going on. She was not trying to dominate him, she only wanted his attention on her.

Pockets full of gantrium rocks, the 12th preemptively begins hoofing it down the hall. It's a good thing, too. The two massive machines lurch to life and spin towards the Legionnaires with a thundering, mechanical howl. The sound and sight of the automatons immediately imparts the Fear of death by crushing upon you. @Dominic Skodati's arcane sight reveals
Both machines are capable of using powers. They are activated by PPE, not ISP. Their PPE reserves are low, but not completely drained. They are operating on their final command: KILL EVERYTHING.
that confirm the 12th is making the correct choice.
As you begin your move down the hall, you see two mining carts that can hold 2 people each. Those who have Detect Arcana active can tell that the carts may be activated and pushed by expending PPE.
Alex calls out to the group. "If we can get back to the doors, I think I can lock them in!"
The chase is on!
Notes and Instructions
Everyone who is subject to Fear, please make a Spirit roll vs. Fear at -2. The Digger dwarfs your dragon and is built for painful violence. Failure inflicts a roll on the Fear table at +2.
You are in a Chase. Half the party will be running or flying (Alex, @Everett Jackson, @Kidemonas, Proditione) since they cannot fit in the carts with anyone else.
Anyone who opts to do so may hop in one of the two carts. Each cart has a maximum capacity of 2 people. Spending 2 PPE will activate the cart for the chase and allows you to Maneuver using your Spellcasting skill instead of Athletics. Anyone Supporting the movement with Spellcasting and another 2 PPE per round will give you a +1 on your Change Position roll. Unfortunately, these are not ISP-powered carts. @Heather Todd may not propel them, but she can ride. Same with @Marten. Your Miracles have no power here.
For your activity options, please review SWADE Chase Rules pg 113-121 or ask.

Marten notes the Automatons coming to life, but is thoroughly unimpressed. Still he is no fool, he runs and jumps into a cart, and sees Dominic heading for the same cart.

Seeing the kill command through his arcane sight causes Dom to shiver deep within his being. The power of the magic at play here overwhelms him and he momentarily stares in frightened awe at what he sees. Then he breaks into a deep sweat as an even bigger realization hits him, he will never be able to cash in on all this gantrium! The torment of it all causes him to convulse before his fight or flight instincts take over, and he runs away fast!

Having moved a bit slow than the others he reaches a cart and infuses it with his will

Finally grabbing the last of what he can and takes off ensuring to offer a ride to any who need one. The tight corridors and loose footing have no real effect on Kidemonas as his spell enhances his ability to maneuver.

Roll coming, need to see how Boost trait turn out.

Failed Fear, Change Position 1 card with Cart, Heather/Adriana gain +2 to Change Position for as long as Fly spell lasts
Bennies: 2/3 (spent one for better Action Card)
Scene Effect: A raise means you act as if you're on a Nexus, and you double your available PPE/ISP.
When activated at a nexus point, triple the Range and Duration of
psychic or magic powers. Attack powers deal +4 damage, and defensive powers gain
+2 points of Toughness. Magic users triple the PPE regained while resting in the area of
a nexus point.
Effects: PPE Pool = 40; Recovery = 15 PPE/hr

Fear Test:
-2 Scene, -2 Sensitive, +2 Psychotically Brave
F1d10!!-2
LdF1d6!!-2
FL1d20+2 Minor Phobia: Speluncaphobia, fear of caves/mines

Cart Racing (free action, 2 PPE):
pLL1d12!!-1
pLL1d6!!-1

Gandalf Moment:
Fly Spell (3 PPE, Swift Flight +5, 2 Extra Targets +4, Shroud +1, total 13 PPE)
pLL1d12!!-1
pLL1d6!!-1
Benny to reroll Spellcasting
pLLLL1d12!!-1
pLLLL1d6!!-1
Fine, just a Success. Adriana and Heather both have Pace 24". Should be enough to make them "twice as fast" as even Everett, giving them a +2 to their Athletics rolls to Change Position. They also get the Shroud benefit: -1 Illumination penalty to be hit.

Final stats: 1/3 Bennies, 25/40 PPE
Gaspard feels an icy dread crawl through his heart. I cannot die on a dead world, in a cave like a tomb..... Cursing loudly, he leaps into the cart, shouting for Marten to get into Dom's, and motioning Perdi to get in with him. "I'd take one of the big guys if I could, but as it is... Just stand at the back of the cart and shield me from any long-range attacks, and swing at 'em if they get close enough to reach."

The demon sneers at him, but does as he's told, while Gaspard jump-starts the cart with a surge of PPE. Then, with a bit of annoyance at Heather starting to run and Adriana clearly not being willing to let her do so alone, he invokes the most ancient of all spells. "Fly, you fools!" Dark leathery wings spring from both women's backs, trailing a smoky residue that makes them a bit hard to focus on. They will find the wings respond instinctively as well as their own feet, propelling them rapidly down the tunnels.

Unfortunately, his own cart seems to be the more sluggish of the two, moving down the tracks but not as fast as Dom's.

With a bit of luck, a heavy portion of fear, and strength where grace fails, the 12th makes the wise decision to begin hustling down the hall. @Dominic Skodati charges one of the carts as @Marten hops in. @Gaspard Gillead, similarly driven by fear, takes the other cart and loads his demonic companion with him as @Heather Todd and @Adriana sprout wings. The potent magics echo back to the whole team with that now-familiar ripple of dread. Heedless, @Everett Jackson snatches up the flailing cat who is clearly not used to having wings. He zigs and zags, hoping to give the automatons at his back a more difficult target to strike. @Kidemonas also squelches the desire to fight and quickens himself for the flight down the hall.

Frustrated that the loader is closing in on his friends faster than they can escape Kidemonas slows for a moment looking back. He one he could slow the thing even if to big for him to destroy before it hurt the others.
Without thinking about the risk Kidemonas waited. As soon as the automaton began acting he interrupted it. Drawing in the biggest breath of his life his mouth erupted in super hot flame, beating the ceiling above the creature in flame so hot molten ore began dripping down on the robot blinding it.

There is a string of curses and general threats (of the type that no one ever follows up on) in Spanguese as Adriana is thrown through the air. However, it has the desired effect as she shakes herself and gets on with the business of fighting. Though they should be limiting magic, surviving is pretty damned important too. She looks over her shoulder at the things while she moves forward weaving to and fro erratically to prevent targeting and speaks some more in Spanguese. Some poem about strength being weakness or something for those with translators.

Surging all his magical energy into the cart the smuggler does what he does best, gets away fast. Looking at Marten he beifly considers pushing the man over board to decrease weight and go even faster but in the end decides he's probably not strong enough.

“Don’t fall behind!” Heather yelled to Kidemenos. “No one try and be a hero! We’re all getting out of this!”

Kidemonas hears Heather, but wonders if perhaps she does not yet know. Not everyone had a mentor like Leben to teach them the stories of true heroes, maybe now it is his role to tell those stories. "Sometimes Heather, the reason everyone else gets out is because of the hero. Our job is not a safe one, and we will lose loved ones."

Kidemonas watches as Everett leaps the wrong direction into the loader and thinks, not bad. The little guy moved with preternatural speed on par with a vampire. That was amazing, he knew the tick like man was fast, and even strong. But that was overall impressive beyond what he could have expected. "Great job!"

Before either of the machines can get started, the Loader is covered in molten rock and ore by @Kidemonas, its maneuverability is magically inhibited by @Adriana, and is pummeled by @Everett Jackson, forcing it to stumble backwards. The Digger reacts poorly to @Marten's face hole light show. It, too, lurches backwards, slamming into the wall of the mine and violently shaking the whole structure. @Heather Todd, @Dominic Skodati, and @Gaspard Gillead take the opportunity to press their retreat.
Devoid of emotion, the automatons are not devoid of clear intent to

Suddenly, it dives forward into the floor of the mine. Massive boulders of rock and gantrium pepper the walls and shower the loader with debris. Amazingly (and frighteningly) the entire automaton disappears into the rock floor like a diver in a pool. The resulting ripple (tidal wave) of stone gives a good indication of the machine's whereabouts, though it doesn't manage to close any appreciable distance.
Alex, for his part, focuses only on

Kidemonas watches as Everett lunges off of him and attacks the machine. It is amazing as the juicer lands the loader foolishly decides to close on it. The idea of Everett getting all of the attention and being the hero of the day is enough Kidemonas cannot resist. "Everett watch out!" He roars as he lunches forward attacking the loader with a flurry of blows. His teeth are unable to sink into the creature as they move, then his claws sink deep into the machine, pulling out what he hopes are essential components.

The Loader is not made of indestructible materials. The concentrated attacks of @Everett Jackson and @Kidemonas prove this out. The machine sustains critical damage, causing its techno-arcane systems to fail. The automaton tumbles backwards and its shell cracks open. The mystic glow it radiated begins to fade.
