William lets Tex finish his negotiations and walks around the shop wondering who this Lady mechanic is. She is beautiful, and has a very strong personality. I said date you idiot, but she smiled at me. He glances over at her where she is talking with the other workers at the shop. She seems so happy, he just smiles. Then she turns and smiles back.

William looks away still smiling, and looking away at some of the other items in the shop. He turns to glance back at her, and sees she is right there, beside him.

She speaks to him, "Hi William, I hear you can drive very well. I like driving too, I think we will be Pilot and Copilot on the way west. do you like to visit new places like I do? I can repair things also for the group. Oh I'm Layla, sorry I should have led with that. After all this is the first, date."

William, is a bit stunned, "How, when?"

Layla replies, "Lady Alexandre is an acquaintance of mine and you mention needing help so that you could help the team more. Also if you get damaged along the way you might need my help." she reaches out for his arm. "You should do more talking when you are on a date. You haven't done this in a while have you."

Chapter 11: The Ashen Sea

Post by Venatus Vinco »

This Far and Much Farther
Having paid the toll to pass through the faerie valley the team finally exists the Great Barrier wall mountains range and comes to the foothills on the other side. It takes some days of searching but eventually they find others from the expedition and a site for a new base camp is constructed. After sending messages back with the safe passages, and not so safe passages, identified it is another week or more before Lady Alexandre and the main company arrive.

The western base camp, one of the first (or perhaps only) post-apocalypse settlement this far west is established in the low hills near a river. The Lady wished to be at the bottom of the hills but the team quickly discovers that the lands on the western side is black with ash. Volcanic ash covers the land as far as the eyes can see. It looks black and bleak. The jagged particles irritate eyes, lungs, and breathing. No doubt it will clog up intakes and manifolds on vehicles as well. Gusts of wind create columns of the stuff making flying difficult as well.

Lady Alexandre makes plans to send out scouts to determine the length and breadth of the Ashen Sea. Of course, Fortune Company is tasked to lead the way again, although slightly reconstituted for the journey. They are introduced to Fernando Acosta and his brother Nico. Fernando brings more flight capability to the group for longer range scouting in his Sidewinder SAMAS power armor while his brother is a scientist to help study the Ashen Sea.

Despite the black surroundings the Lady remains hopeful.

"It appears the great barrier wall shielded us in the eastern regions from this cloud of ash. For this we should all be grateful, as the destruction wrought by the cataclysm may have been much worse. If that is even imaginable. Prepare yourselves to cross this Ashen Sea, I suspect much of the Golden Age lies undisturbed beneath it. Explore and mark what you can for the company, but the main purpose of your expedition is to find where it ends, if it does."
Gear Up
Will take equipment requests for this next leg. Also role play a bit of meeting Fernando and Nico.

When Ferando comes over, William is there with Layla at his side. William goes first and greets the new person. "Good day to you sir, I am William, and the is my fiancé Layla. Welcome to our group. we usually do the driving and navigating. Layla is our Mechanic. so if you need help fixing your suit, She is the one to see."

Layla ands a new twist to her usual, "Pleased to meet you Fernando, William forgot to add soon to be married. What a good way of celebrating when all the groups are together and at the new home."

This surprises William, but by now he is use to it. What Lala says usually happens. William quickly points out the ash and his concerns, "I'm not sure this placed full of ash is the right place for all, but we are diffidently close to our new home."

Fernando raised his multi optics specs up to his eyes, and observed the APC rolling down the mountain pass. This would be group Fortune, the expedition he and his nephew would be joining. He could feel that itch on his skin already. There would probably be magic users on the journey, just the thought of that brought nightmares of Tolkeen bubbling up into his mind. Demons that hid in the shape of children..lightning striking from a cloudless sky onto sleeping soldiers. Mierda, he wanted a smoke. He shoved the memories back down, focusing on the future. He had to get the kid as far west as possible, away from the ISS. Even if it meant making a deal with the devil

Fernando called down from his perch, “Oi mijo! The others are arriving, put some coffee on!”. Nico pops his head out of their shelter, a bright smile spreading over his young face. Finally! The journey of a lifetime would be underway! He was so excited he couldn’t sleep at all last night. They did'nt have much info the team arriving, just that they are some of the best the company has to offer. Nico offered up a prayer that his uncle wouln't scare them too much, he was always so paranoid.

Fernando grasps William's hand firmly, "Hola William, good to meet you.". He inclines his head respectively "Senora. Congratulations to you both."

He gives Mars a smile, "Haven't we all. Good to meet you. Let me show you around.". Fernando gives everyone a tour of the settlement when they are ready.

Nico introduces himself to everyone, more excited than he had ever been in his 16 years of life. Energetic but polite as he walks with everyone, asking a million questions about who they are and where they come from.

Ajax trots up to Nico and @Fernando Acosta. The heavily armored centaur stands tall above them, though there's just the slightest slump in his shoulders. "Greetings, then. Heading west?" His speech is slurred ever so slightly, and his eyes blink just a little too slowly. "West is our fate, and fate is our fate..." He takes a belt off of a suspicious-smelling canteen. "Or something. I am Ajax. No one is faster than me." He bobs his head in an impaired bowing motion. "A tour? Sure. As long as we can stop by the provisions post on the way. That little person there makes the biggest drinks!" He raises his canteen again before tipping the contents into his mouth.
Along the way, he looks down at Nico. "You are young for such a trip. The optimism of youth. Most would see choking ash and blackness and shy away, and yet you seem more than eager. What do you think is out there, colt?"

Remains of an Empire

The base camp for the expedition sits in a river valley where the old Colorado River and Gunnison Rivers meet. Before the rifts the area was known as the Grand Junction. Following the Colorado River West, or the remains of the old highway 70, to the end of the valley reveals the dense ashen sea. Already company scientists speculate that the ash cloud from the Yosemite volcano eruption during the cataclysm hit the mountains and settled to the ground, sparing the eastern half of the continent.

The area was barren long before the cataclysm known for its many canyons and valleys. Lady Alexandre studies some pre-cataclysmic maps as she welcomes the members of Adventure Inc.

"A vast wasteland lies between us and what was once the more populous regions of this territory. The Salt Lake City area, said to be a large metroplex during the Golden Age, is about 300 miles away across this ash." She traces a line that follows the old American Empire Highway 70 toward a large lake."We plan to send outriders into the Ash to blaze a path."

She then follows the Colorado River with her finger to a small valley. "This was the city of Moab. It is along the river from here and was in an oasis valley similar to this one. If it was preserved from the ash there may be life there, or a suitable point to establish a more forward base."

She looks to the group and smiles.

"Do you wish to press across the Ashen Sea to Salt Lake or traverse the Colorado River to Moab?"

Ajax decides it best to be lucid of mind for the meeting with Lady Alexandre. He cranks on the juice. Moments later, the energy, the power, and the focus slam into gear. Yet even with the juice, he knows who he is. "I am faster than any living creature, but even I have not discerned how to run across the water. If there's floating to be done, let that task fall to others. I would prefer to run the Ashen Sea." He glances across the faces of his comrades. "I will, of course, defer to my associates if they would prefer the river."

Nico considers @Ajax 's question. "Hmm, given the direction we are traveling we could be facing the ruins of several legendary golden age cities.known to be places of luxury for the wealthy. Sources also claim that the land to the farthest west was extremely fertile, providing a large amount of food stuff for the American Empire.". His face takes on a grim look, "I doubt much of that is left after the Coming of the Rifts though"

Finding the base camp is a welcome site after the last few days. Once they arrive, he greets the two people )@Fernando Acosta and Nico) who come out to meet him, "Thank you, a cup of warm coffee is an unexpected pleasure. But please excuse me, I need to submit our report. Which we way is Lady Alexandre?" He sets off to the command tent/center and reports on what they encountered and learns that the two people he met are also join Team Fortune.

When Lade Alexandre proposes the group can either travel across the Ashen Sea or travel the river, Tex can only think back to the beginning of their travels when they'd caused a ruckus in town and were pursued by one legged pirates on their way to Escabana. He nods in agreement with @Ajax, "I think we'd rather stick to land now." He considers the trip. "We are still well stocked generally in the APC, but the fine sand out there will be a problem." He turns to @William Rufus and Layla, "Can you rig up some baffles for the APC to reduce the chance of damaging the APC's engine and drive train?"

Afterwards, he goes and sees if any of the Technowizards who happen to be in the base camp if they've come up with a magical solution (Perhaps a TW device that can be installed on the APC that casts Environmental Protection upon it and it's contents?)

Ajax ponders their proposed courses. "If it is to be by the Ashen Sea, then having reserve breathing modules for each of us is wise. For the river, flotation devices or underwater breathing equipment for those of us who draw breath makes sense. Even though most of us are encased in armor, there is no way to tell what may befall us once we leave. Survival equipment is of paramount importance." He then checks his packs for spare ammo for his railgun. "Anything we have for ammunition should be loaded up."
He turns to Nico and @Fernando Acosta. "The promise of discovery. That is a fair reason. Let us hope this trip reveals something good amongst this waste."

William and Layla head to the meeting they talk about the new people .
Layla says, "They seem to be good people, the boy is awful young."

William states, "He might be the next generation."

After Lady A speaks
@William Rufus and Layla, "Can you rig up some baffles for the APC to reduce the chance of damaging the APC's engine and drive train?"
William looks at Layla, "Go n dear."
Layla Speaks up, "First get bigger filters and carry extra so we can change them out daily. We have I believe a TW Force Field Generator we need to worry about dust storms we need to protect the vehicle before it hits. So, set up camp early and take breaks every couple of hours for inspections. We can try to set up skirts and blowers for the wheel and wheel wells keeping the ash and grit
away. Might have to travel slower so as to not kick up the crap."

To Lady Lady Alexandra, "If I could get some of the mechanics together, we can get our ride set up. Then they can proceed to make changes to the other vehicles. We well need to do this eventually, if we are planning to set up trade routes through this area."

"Which route has the best access to food?" Icosa wants to know. "I realize we'll be bringing our own as well, but I'm a little concerned about traveling through such desolate areas with only the food we can carry to depend on."

She consults the maps, then adds, "The city in the salt lake was larger though, hm? That might make a better destination..."

Setting Sail
Image
Horror Factor: -4

Before setting across the wastes the group takes stock of their possessions and situation. Layla figures she could create an advanced air filter and dust skirts for the Mammoth, it would take a few days and require some scrounging up some parts. The Techno-Wizards in the company have no shortage of ideas on how to protect the vehicle. Of source, it would require a mass PPE battery. Fortunately, the group has a dragon who might be willing to deign to such a thing. Maybe.

The Bubble
The TWs in the group can set up an *environmental protection* field around the Mammoth. It would need 8 PPE, half that on a ley line, per hour to operate but would completely protect the Mammoth from the effects of the Ashen Sea. An onboard PPE battery can hold up to 24 PPE but would need to be replenished from personal reserves if it ran out. Note: a travel period in the Journey rules is 6 hours. Making this upgrade would reduce your starting Supply die by two die types (eg d12 to d8). Both upgrades are possible.
The Mad Max
Bolting on steel skirts, adding a big muffler and air filter can help mitigate, but not eliminate the environmental effects. This would grant a free reroll on Piloting Rolls for the Mammoth when making Journey rolls. Making this upgrade would reduce your starting Supply die by one die type (eg d12 to d10). Both upgrades are possible.
After making their best preparations the group sets forth on their journey to the Salt Lake.

Journey Tasks (Horror Factor -4):
Navigator (Required, Survival)
Lookout (Required, Notice)
Pilots (Required for each Vehicle, Piloting/Driving)
Scout (Optional, Stealth)
Signature
Didn't have a signature but wanted the 1 EP for using OOC tags!

"I really hate this ash. I TOLD you we should have gone with the river route."

With that, the young hatchling runs off into the ashen sea to scout out for the group, trusting his camouflage scales to keep him hidden from all but the most observant.

Tex grins and rubs his hands together as he looks at the specs for the 'Bubble', "This is great! But you need a battery you say? I think we may have one." Tex goes and finds @Tiny Tim "Tiny Tim, the techno-wizards have device to keep the vehicle functional across the Ashen Sea; however, they need some components that can be found in your magical energy generator." (I am guessing that this is what VV is hinting at; however, this TW device doesn't contain a battery, it only works on a ley line). "It would really help the team if we could use it. If we find any treasure out there, I think we'd all be willing to let you have first choice. What do you say?"

The mage also signs off on the more mundane adjustments to prepare the APC for the extremes of the wastelands.

When the trip starts, Tex stays in the vehicle making sure the 'Bubble' is powered and helps keep an eye out.

Wheels Up
The barren landscape shows little signs of life as the thick layer of ash covers the entire region. This area was desolate even before the cataclysm but now it has take on a dark, alien, quality.

Layla inspects the Mammoth after the first day of travel. A low tire pressure light has her confused. Armed with her patch kit she examines the huge ATV tires before uncovering a sharp spike that punctured the mega steel belted tires. Pulling it out she gasps louder than the escaping air. Quickly she patches the leak and brings the shard to the group.

In her hand is a massive, sharp, shard of pure diamond.

"You think the volcano spat up more of these? I know techno wizards who would kill for something like this.

Tex holds out his hands to take possession of the diamond shard. "Oh, I may have a way," he says. He moves to the side of the APC that is blocking most of the wind and prepares a summoning ritual. He's not as confident as he sounds as he remembers back to when they encountered the Earth Elementals in their place of power. Slow calm breaths, let the power call out, be courteous and confident.

Duration: 10
Spellcasting 1d12: [6] = 6 (+1 Lessor Ring of the Elder, -1 minor phobia)

As the dust swirls into a vaguely humanoid shape larger than a normal human, Tex speaks. "Welcome, earth friend. I humbly request your help." He holds up the diamond shard. "We are looking for more of these gem stones, please search the surrounding area and return them to us." Almost as an after thought, he pulls out his Xanthine gem. "If you see any gems like this, we would like those as well. Complete this task, and you are done, and have our gratitude."

As the elemental merges back with the earth, Tex's mind is tethered to it, listening to it's alien thoughts. When/if it finds any other gems, he confirms that is what they are looking for.

Big Shiny Rocks
The others stay on alert as Tex sends an earth elemental to scour for more gemstones (Tex take a benny, cool idea). It doesn't take long for the elemental to return laden with enough pure diamonds to make every techno-wizard in Lazlo weep. Interestingly it finds the stones in an intricate pattern, laid in the ash in some sort of lattice like network. The size and quality are stunning. It does not return with any of the other gems Tex was looking for. As the elemental sinks back into the earth the large pile of diamonds sparkles in the midday sun.

Suddenly figures emerge from the ashes, taking humanoid shape the ash swirling around them making them look like living shadows. They don't speak but those who open their minds can hear voices in their heads, as if many people were speaking in unison. "You have broken the link. Return the conduits."

Just then the ash swirls up, blocking the sun with a dark cloud and sending grit everywhere. Those without any kind of EBA must make a Vigor roll against an environmental Hazard or suffer a level of Fatigue. Any actions are done with a -2 vision penalty, that is no offset by optics. You are not being attacked...yet.

The swirling ash is annoying, but Tex's Exterminator EBA keeps out the dust. "Thank you, you have fulfilled your task," Tex says to the elemental as it returns to it's own dimension. He recalls the beautiful patterns he saw as the diamonds were retrieved. It's amazing what natu... his thoughts turn to an audible sigh as he sees multiple things appear.

He quickly casts Detect Arcana to figure out what these things are.

"Conduits?" Tex asks. "Do you mean these gem stones? There was a symmetry...Knowledge itself can be considered wealth. Please teach us about these conduits, and we will return what is yours."

Ajax curses the ash, though it doesn't penetrate his armor. "Of course the diamonds are guarded. I told you nothing like this would be left alone!"
Confounded by the swirling cloud that blocks his vision, he can only stamp in place. Listening to @Tex Arcana ask for guidance, he stops short of trying to do anything violent to the shapes that appear. Still, even these creatures wouldn't be fast enough to get the drop on him. His weapons remain at his side.

Mars smiles beneath her helmet. ”Ah, so the pointy rocks have a use after all; they bring us battle!”

She draws her equalizer with one hand and holds the other out to her side. A wicked looking knife made of red light forms in her hand, its glow playing patterns against the floating ash.

Rolls
Psionics 1d10!, Wild 1d6!: [10!, 8]+[4] = 22 to cast smite, summoning her psi-dagger. With a raise, it adds +4 damage and costs her -1 ISP thanks to channeling. Neat! She spends an additional ISP to have smite affect her equalizer, too.

The figures appear as pure energy without physical form, something akin to a tectonic entity or ethereal energy being.

Tex can sense living presences all around them. Somehow connected to the geometric pattern formed by the latticework of diamonds. It's a bit odd, more like one single mind. It takes a long time for any response to come from the figures as if many minds are mulling what was said.

"You seek an exchange?"

Then another long pause as ash swirls, this time surround the Mammoth. Lyla's sensors go nuts as the energy beings surround it. Finally, in the cargo hold a crate of e-clips pops open.

"Return the conduits. Provide the reservoirs. Take the remnants."

Ash swirls again uncovering a mound of diamonds similar in purity to the others but still uncut or formed into pieces. The mound is easily worth a fortune, especially to techno-wizards and stone masters.

Exchange
Provide a crate of e-clips, reduce Supply Die by one step, gain millions in pure unct diamonds.

If the group agrees the forms swirl again as the diamonds are returned to their pattern and Tex can feel the busy presence turn to a more quiet order.

"You also seek a knowledge exchange?"

William looks at Layla and she nods so William continues, "She will give it back since it is not ours, but she dose not know where the tire picked it up, so she can't place it back where we picked it up. She would also like to know how to avoid more of these. I would like you to know that others might not be so nice about this and if you could better hide the crystal you might save your self more trouble from are kind who would come and try to take them."

Layla looks at the entity and then hands it over to the entity and speaks, "I am sorry if we interfered with your culture. it is beautiful but way to large to have on a ring on my finger. Murder Hobos
Chaffing at the thought of no ammunition the group unanimously declines the trade. However, curiosity still sets in as Tex asks if there is another way to provide power and Nico begins an analysis of the crystalline structure in the ground.

When Tex asks what they need the energy for he is suddenly, and unnervingly, shown as he is whisked from his conscious body onto the astral plane. On this plane he can see the latticework of crystals growing and gleaming like a giant city, energy pulses seemingly at random as these astral beings flit between structures. In his disembodied the Ley line Walker can see a whole society spread before him. He can feel the throb of power and realizes that something must keep this great astral domain going and the absolute derth of le lines in the area means power. It appears the beings can convert energy into psychic power in the reverse of how a Techno-Wizard can convert psychic potential energy into physical effects.

As Tex experiences the wonders of the astral realm everyone else watches as he suddenly collapses on the ground and becomes unresponsive!

Nicos instruments pick up a massive energy matrix all around them equal to the thrum of a large city but there is nothing to be seen.

Inside the matrix, Tex looks in wonder at what he sees. A whole civilization contained within these gems! This is amazing! He tries to speak. "Converting ordinary energy into psychic is an amazing gift. But giving you our reservoirs are not a permanent solution. They would sustain you for a short while, but then be gone. I offer you an alternative. Come with us. We will allow you tap the power core of our vehicle. In return, we ask that you use some of the excess psychic energy to power our techno-wizard device that keeps our vehicle safe in this Ashen Sea as well as help us recharge our magical items. What say you?"

On the ground, inside his helmet, his unseeing eyes are wide and a smile is on his lips.

Ajax's hands go to his weapons as @Tex Arcana falls to the ground. "Tex? TEX!" The futility of fighting energy-beings with a sword or a gun notwithstanding, he pulls out his JA-9, hoping that the variability in the beam may have an effect. He shouts at the beings he has yet to actually hear. "What have you done to our friend?! Restore him now or so help me, I'll surrender my soul to fight you in the spirit realm. ANSWER ME!" He calls out to @Mars, hoping to hold back violence until the die is truly cast. "Hold! We don't know how to get him back if he is not truly dead!"

Fernando ignites his engines momentarily, boosting to Mars calling out to her "Wait!". Caution still prompts him to ready the lasers on his armor, just in case violence really does break out.

Nico looks up from his instruments, brimming with excitement at the findings his expression changing to one of shock at seeing Tex fall to the ground. William's words catch his attention. If Tex can't be reached physically, maybe psychic contact would work. As covertly as possible, Nico stretches out his mind to Tex, searching for his consciousness

Crystal Dreams

As Tex collapses guns come to the read and engines roar. Inside Tex is amazed and trying to cook up a deal.

Fortunately, cooler heads prevail outside giving the Ley Line Walker some time.

"Your friends appear agitated by your presence here. Perhaps us coming with you is not a good idea."

Suddenly the vision fades and Tex's eyes pop open staring the the big sky above. As he stirs Layla yells out to the others, "He looks okay."

The energy swirls and circles again, this time Tex can hear in his head.

"Make your proposal, we are intrigued but cautious."

OOC: Let's begin a social conflict to see how much of your idea they go along with. Tex is leading he can recruit the others to support him if they can find a way. Lead skill is Persuasion.

Tex's smile slowly disappears as he comes back to consciousness. If anyone is staring in his face plate, his eyes open suddenly and he jutters in surprise at the unexpected view.

"I'm okay! I'm okay," Tex repeats as he scrambles on to his feet. "These beings were showing me their," he pauses trying to think of the correct word. "Their home, city? There are countless beings living within the structure created by these diamonds we've found out here."

He finds a water bottle. In a quick gesture, he pops his helmet and takes a swig and then closes it. "I've offered to take them with us, but they want to know more. Technowizards have created devices to convert magical energy into electricity; these people are able to take electical energy and turn it into psychic energy. That is an amazing ability."

He turns to the swirls in the dust. "Here in this place, you have found a home, it is isolated, which may be a benefit, but what if we were able to relocate you to a place that makes your life easier. We come from a place called Lazlo, a place that welcomes all who are peaceful and have a desire to learn and share what they know and can do. We could provide you with a crate of e-clips, but the energy they hold is finite and will eventually will be drained. I believe with your help, we could arrange your home on our vehicle and allow you access to our power supply to," he holds out his hands and air quotes (not that they would understand). "keep the lights on. We have a device that require magical or psychic energy to keep us safe from this harsh environment. In the short term, we'd ask you to help us keep that device running in exchange for the electrical energy we provide. I'd like to take you back with us to Lazlo, but if you find a suitable place after we leave this Ashen Sea, then you are welcome to go. It may be months before we return to Lazlo."

The dust swirls angrily around the group but does not harm, Tex's words seem to upset the beings. He gets a strong sense of the word "Home" from them, or at least as best their alien minds can put together. The group can hear the harmonic sound of energy passing through crystals, like windchimes in a hurricane. The sounds and flying soot are visually spectacular and extremely unnerving.

Finally Tex is flooded with more images, he gets the distinct impression they beings thing he is threatening to evict them. Something was lost in translation!

Observing the situation go from bad to worse, Nico & Fernando put their heads together trying to see if there was a way to make Tex's plan a reality. Hopefully in a simple enough way that these beings would be able to understand as to ease everyone's already frayed nerves.

Tex waves @Ajax down when he says that they had offered no harm. "Ajax, we did, I hurt them, inadvertently. We had thought we had found treasure when we found that diamond. I then disturbed them further when I summoned an elemental to find more. But this isn't just diamonds, it is their home. I wish you could have seen it, these diamonds define their home, it was amazing. They are not physical beings like us, but beings of the mind."

The Ley Line Walker looks towards @Mars, "Offer them no harm. If we can not convince them to join us, then we will leave them in peace. As in no war, not pieces."

He composes his thoughts, and then says to the swirls, "I see that I am not explaining myself clearly. Let me start again. Do your people have a name?" Towards the swirl that seems to be the leader, "Do you have a name?" My name is Tex Arkana. We see that your home is within and between the diamonds. We do not want to take them from you. We want you to come with us if you are able. The diamonds are yours." He nods and gestures to the team to do the same in agreement. "I had hoped you would travel with us for a time so we can learn and help each other leave this barren place. That we may find a place that you would be welcomed and be safe. If you wish to remain, then I am saddened, but understand."

If I am supposed to roll again.

William looks at the others and the energy creature and speaks, "We were all meant to be here today at this moment, all of us. I have Faith that what ever is decided here to day will be the right choice. We have always offered help to those that needed it, sometimes we failed. But we keep going. Maybe Lazlo isn't the right place for them, but we might find another place that they will be safer at. We can't guarantee 100% that this is the right move. I don't think anyone can. More than likely this place. in a few years will be swarming with more humans and I can guarantee that once the word diamonds are used then some will start a stampede to find and get them at what ever it takes. They will stop at nothing. I think Tex is right, you should come with us. See this world and find a better place, a Safer place, for your Cities."
