Kia can alter the passage of time for herself, or in relatively small areas around herself. The effects of this range from causing an object to experience hundreds of years of subjective time in a moment, causing it to break down, to trapping someone in an eyeblink of time, unable to move relative to the outside world. She can even cause time to speed up around an injury, letting it seem to heal quickly...or take a 'breather' in just a second or two. She also has the ability to become a 'beacon' to future versions of herself, which can arrive to help out. Their existence in the current timeline is tenuous though, and it's unclear if they're 'really' her, or echoes of uncertain future events.

Kia's mother is a native Hawaiian biologist who met and fell in love with a Japanese volcanologist visiting for an ongoing research project of the island's tectonics and volcanism. Kia is their only child so far. When the research project ended due to funding being moved, Kia's family decided to remain in the United States, but wound up having to move closer to her dad's new job at a university on the mainland. Fortunately it was relatively easy for Kia's mother to relocate...but for Kia it was a difficult thing indeed to say good-bye to the islands and all her friends there. Nevertheless, she hopes to make lots of new friends here!
