ON THE ROAD TO RUIN...
It may be a forgone conclusion that the Nameless will defeat this demonic force. But there is never a straight line from start to finish when the forces of the Tomorrow Legion face of against the horrors of the modern world. The bridge holds, monsters appear seemingly out of nowhere, thralls fall over themselves to protect their sub-demon master. Battle destroys unfortunate flora and fauna that doesn't move fast enough to avoid the conflict.

There is the camp. Huts made of grasses, branches and found objects, plus something resembling thin pale leather. There are no kids or non-combatants, just monsters and insane humans of the grubbiest kind.

QUICK CONTEST BONANZA!!!
Hey there sports fans
Thanks for holding in there!
Rather than jump right into a tactical combat, let's move things forwards with some quick combat!

But there's more!

Action options are wide open: Fighting, Investigating, Wilderness-y things, Medical, etc. Use whatever you think is relevant and can justify with a narrative.

Success means two rolls at -2, same or different rolls, up to you. This is a Dangerous Encounter.

There are some exciting details here I can't wait to reveal! Well, they're exciting to me...

Nomel grumbles into the radio mic. "Feels like we've been in this fight forever. C'mon, folks, let's finish this!" He opens up with a few rounds from the Boom Gun at the larger targets, flechettes slicing through beast-flesh and demon-skin.

Once he's softened up the worst targets, he disengages the gun and the anchors, just in time to meet some of the raiders who had been hoping to take advantage of the Glitterboy's known 'weakness' to swarm attacks. Of course, they weren't expecting him to pull out a giant Nymbu staff and start sweeping the area around himself, cleaving through them and generally knocking their heads around. He tries not to kill with the staff, but he's not above leaving them with nasty headaches.

Monsters erupted from hiding and charged. Whisper was done playing games. Sleep spells and illusions.

The light around her seemed to drain away as shadows lengthened and expanded, surrounding her in a blot of inky twilight. An unnatural chill seeped out, curling like invisible tendrils around trees and fallen bodies; spreading ground-hugging mist outward from it.

To those with the senses to feel it, the center of that artificial night pulsed with naked arcane might.

"Enough," said Whisper. Her voice was indeed a whisper, but somehow sounded as if it was spoken from just beside every living being's ear. The shadows coiled around her suddenly struck out, forming several very long, extremely sharp spines that pierced through the leaders of the pack charging her. They didn't have time to scream, or even whimper. Each tumbled lifelessly to the ground, a hole big enough to shove a fist into bored through their foreheads.

Still they came.

More of those spears of pure darkness lanced out, meeting each wave and leaving them falling over the bodies of those who came before.

The sorceresses voice still crooned in the ears of friend and foes alike, echoing eerily. "Fools" blind fools "I do not thirst for blood" thirsty "...had you let us pass, you could have lived." nevermore "Even now" it's too late "it's not too late. Give up and go. You" you "cannot" cannot "defeat" defeat "me." meeeeeee...

All the while she spoke, the shadows performed their grim work, leaving a low wall of corpses spread before her.

Partially pinned under a fallen dinosaur though struggled a survivor. Though injured, the darkness hadn't taken him in the head, but rather the right shoulder, next to the arm. He was finding it very hard to pull himself free of the dead beast with only his left arm working.

Then the sun went out. With dawning dread he craned his neck around to spot a figure looming over him, highlighted by a dim violent gleam. In the the gloom she didn't look like a person at all...more like a shadow in the shape of a person. A silhouette.

He felt something cold twining around his wrists, something sharp digging into his cheeks, his neck, his chest...pressing like a dagger tip, but not quite breaking skin.

"Stay here, and don't try to move. Take shallow breaths. If you try to escape, I will know."

More sharp points...his legs, and between them.

"When I'm done with the others, I will return for you. I will have blood, or answers. You have a few moments to consider which to offer."

WAIT, THOSE ARE PICTURES OF...
It is over quickly but the battle is brutal. Several of the humans and simvan fall victim to Nomel's staff. Brody dispatches the bad guys up close and with lots of blood. Whisper is equally effective, and all the more frightening because of the dark nature of her deadly magic.

The thornhead is the last to go down, his laughs and curses drowned out by the Boom Gun. All that is left is a smoking hole.

Investigating the camps is a horrific experience. At every turn they find evidence of cannibalism. They find bones, and unfortunately it doesn't take a medical doctor to tell that some of them belonged to children. It's grisly, and horrid and hardly believable. Nothing is cooking when the Nameless attacked, but it is all to obvious that people were cooked and eaten...

Brody opens the boxes and the contents are generally grisly and unthinkable: there are gold teeth, jewelry, small bionic parts, but worse than that are jars of preserved body parts. Eyes, fingers...and other things. At the bottom, though even a hardened warrior like Brody, he finds a skin wrapped packet of text written on parchment in a language he does not understand or even recognize.

However, also contained within the packet are photographs. Photographs of the Nameless!

Not just the current members, almost everyone who's been involved with them. There are no other photos or documents of any kind in the camp. And Whisper was extremely thorough. The evil of the situation may resemble some of the evil she's experienced her whole life...

DEAR GOD WHAT IS THAT!!!
Fear
Cannibalism isn't unheard of in Rifts earth, but this is more horrific and barbaric than anyone has seen or heard of before. Whisper is "hardened" and gets a +1 to the roll. This is a "Nausea" type roll SWADE pg 124.

Nomel is, of course, horrified by the revelations; while he'd suspected the cannibalism right from the start, as had most of the others, the sheer depth of the depravity on display here was soul-jarring. Inside Gloria, he takes a moment to center himself, bonding with the machine until the disgust and revulsion is at a safe distance to be examined dispassionately.

He gives no outward sign of this distress--a Glitterboy is good for much, including hiding your face when you need to. But when they get to the photos, he is a bit taken aback. "Wait, they have me in there? As well as some of those folks you told me used to be with the team? That's... Does that mean someone back at Castle Refuge has been dealing them information? Can't be just to set us up to be a snack--meaning there's someone else that decided this'd be a good way to disable us." It's a disturbing conclusion, but the only one he can see--someone back at base is dealing with another party, and that party set them up with the cannibals.

Brody with intense concentration focuses on what is in the box. Brody starts chocking but manages to control himself. It is terrible but things done in Tolkeen were horrible too.

"Lady and gentlemen, someone seem to know the Nameless and I think these people were warned of our coming.” He shows the pictures of the group members.

“I have this parchment with some writing on it.” He hands it to anyone who wants to investigate it. “I think the body parts and all should be burned."

He mentions the gold teeth and the jewelry, "The gold teeth seems morbid and as for the jewelry, not sure what we should with it.".

Whisper stares stoically at the ruin of flesh before her, then turns away. It was maybe not the worst she'd ever seen during her time in the True Federation, but it seemed worse now, somehow. These weren't 'demons,' but people twisted against their natures. And she wasn't in the True Federation anymore...she'd rather hoped to have left this kind of thing behind.

"Let me see that," she said to Brody quietly, holding out a hand for the parchments. When the package is in her grasp, she discards the skin wrappings with a grimace and taps the power contained within the circlet wrapped around her brow. Her eyes gleam slightly as glowing, ever-shifting runes appear over them, sliding upwards from her bottom eyelids to the tops.

The photographs were concerning as well, of course. It was likely someone had been scrying on the fracas with Simon and his disastrous summoning. Someone with a good memory could have made a physical illusion of the people he'd seen, then photographed that image to circulate. Whisper had never exactly posed for class photos, so she wasn't sure how else her likeness would have been gained.

Though it wasn't impossible that the True Federation had pictures of her, of course. Lovely thought, that.

A thought occurs to Nomel. "Weren't we trying to take at least a couple prisoners? Did we actually get any? Might be time for a few questions about who gave them this little package...."

Still shuffling through the pages, Whisper waves a hand back at the one she captured alive, now bound and gagged and probably not sobbing anymore.

"I questioned that one, but feel free if you have more to ask."

WHAT DID THEY SAY?
Whisper's prisoner is mostly not very communicative, but even still it's clear this person doesn't know about the note or photos. Nomel then checks for any other survivors. There are two still alive, but they'll need medical attention before they say anything. One look says that even if they hadn't had the snot beat out of them by the Nameless they were not healthy people.

Brody notices first, but everyone soon realizes, that these aren't "real" pictures. They are digital recreations. Basically they are very accurate composite sketches. Archie studies them closely and realizes there are some elements of the team members that reflect earlier or later time periods, not all the intel that generated these composites came at the same time. Whisper's conjecture is mostly correct.

Whisper's spell takes effect and the gibberish turns into letters. It's a simple message:
Encoded Message wrote: Reward for the Tomorrow Legion team known as the "Nameless":
1 million UC for each present and past team member
100 million UC if entire team is eliminated
Deliver head of each as proof to XXXXXX, Merctown
The thing is, and Whisper is the only one who can pick up on this, the translation of the words sounds like she's reading something put into a translator backwards. This letter was probably not written originally in this most Federation of Magic looking language.

Brody speaks to the team, “It looks like the pictures were taken out from other at different time periods, then put together, and rearranged a bit? I don’t recognize all of these people but they do have some of you. I don’t think the prisoners would know much they see to be pawns and people of power don’t tell them all the family secrets. They get fed the leftover killings. These guys are more like hunting dogs.”

Brody looks around for more items then speaks up, "Where are the vehicles ? These guys have been at this site for a long time. Because they have waylaid groups that come by. The weak minded may have been brained washed or drugged to cooperate."

Nomel considers for a bit. "So I guess the question is, do we keep goin' on towards Dweomer and deal with this as it happens, or do we go back to Merctown and try to find whoever's hunting us down?" Thinking it through, he goes on. "The dude in Merctown's probably just a fixer, yeah? Suppose goin' back prolly won't get us much other than a little satisfaction--an' it might actually help whoever's behind this, since it'd slow us down. Least, I assume whoever's behind this is tryin' ta interfere with the job."

Archie shakes his head in disbelief. The abductors of his parents have found him in hiding and are now threatening everyone around him.

Was Symon a plant?

"It really sucks not knowing who is following us."

Archie asks to see the photos againand does his best at trying to remember the time and place the originals were taken and what kind of doctoring had been done

If time permits and the team feels it is wise, Archie can heal the two "survivors".

"Oh, it doesn't take much imagination to guess," Whisper says as she tucks the message away. "A bounty's been placed on us. A very generous one. A million each, ten for a squadwipe. Given the intel they have on us, and the resources, it seems clear that the Federation of Magic isn't terribly pleased with our progress so far."

She smiles mirthlessly.

"You didn't expect this to be easy, now did you?"

"Nomel has the right of it. Pushing on is the only acceptable option at the moment. This bounty statement looks like it's been translated once or twice, which suggests it's circulated quite a bit. Too late to try to backtrack it and keep it from spreading. We'll want to move with lighter step, I think...not be so quick to reveal ourselves. Or get used to fending off bounty hunters."

Brody hands the photos to Arch, "There you go Big fella."

After Whispers talk about the bounty Jack pipes up, "Well if we are worth so much to them we better make them think we are to hot to handle." I got to kill them just for the general purpose that they put my name on a bounty, I'm a ghost no one is suppose to know about me. and what are these idiots going to use that type of credits for ?"

"Can someone clarify, What we need to do and to whom it needs to be done? Is there a plan yet? Or is 12 % is good enough to go for now?"

TAKE A LITTLE TRIP, TAKE A LITTLE TRIP
Conversation and discussion occupy the Nameless as the continue to look around the camp. These people have been busy and ruthless. Down a few dozen feet away from the river is a defile with their midden. It's mostly techno-trash though, junk and scraps from the people they've eaten that has little to no trade value.

Further afield in a dense copse is another sort of graveyard. There are the remains of several vehicles. There are more parts than there are vehicles, so these people must be stripping them to sell in parts. Currently there are two vehicles marginally intact. A Big Boss ATV is stripped of most of its armor, but otherwise looks intact. A Speedster hoverbike sits nearby. It is almost completely intact, but the nuclear powerplant is suspended on an engine hoist; it needs to be re-connected to get the bike operational.

What are you doing?

GM Notes:
  • The Big Boss is fully function, but it has no armor and the Exposed Crew trait. The armor plating is not in the junk nearby.
  • It is a simple repair roll to reinstall the Speedster's powerplant. It was take apart just before the battle!

Brody is happy they found some rides he knows that it is going to be a long walk to anywhere . He looks at the ATV and the hover . " I suggest we take both. Anyone here have the ability to put an engine in a vehicle?"

Brody tries Telemechanics: total=11
1d8 = 6: 6

Wild Dice
1d6 = 6: 6 Aced 1d6 = 5: 5

He puts the engine back in and connects the right cables.

Archie was going to put the engine back in himself but after Brody does it, he goes to look at retrofitting the Big Boss to accomodate Nomel's Glitterboy and saftey harnessas for the crew riding in it.

Looking over the pair of vehicles--and the way the Big Boss is set up for him--and after they all compare skill-sets, Nomel considers. "Well, then, we got a couple options when we get to Merctown, I think. We could sell the bike, and hire a driver. Or we could sell the Big Boss and just keep the bike--it looks big enough to carry Whisper and Brody, both. Former means we can travel faster--I can ride in the Boss-Buggy. But it also means hiring someone which...." He looks at the dossiers. "Odds are, there's someone passing these out in Merctown, too. Posing as a driver would be a good way for them to get in close to us. If we just keep the hoverbike, then we don't have that problem, and Brody can fly it, but it does mean we are limited to me and Archie's speed--which I'm afraid means mine. So, I guess it comes down to speed or security--which do we want more?"

Whisper sighed.

"Does the Tomorrow Legion really give zero support to its field agents?" the silhouette asked. "Surely they have contacts in Merctown who could arrange something suitable. A hover vehicle large enough to carry all of us doesn't seem beyond the means for the great liberators of Castle Refuge, hmm?"

Nomel considers--a hover-barge of some sort would be preferable, of course. But... "I think it's more a matter of time, communications and profile. There may be a Refuge agent in MercTown, but they weren't part of any mission profile I got. Unless you all have more, that means we'd have to get to MercTown, and either ask around or just use a communication station to call back to base. Either of those methods aren't very secure for a group with a massive bounty on our heads. And either way, we'd have to take a lot of time doing them, meaning chilling in MercTown for a few days. I'm just not sure it's a great idea to sit still for that long." He thinks, then adds, "There's also the issue that we're officially not supposed to be announcing who we are on this specific job. That WAS part of the briefing. So we can't go around saying, 'Yo, Castle Refuge people here, in need of transportation.' They couldn't have anticipated that we'd lose all of our vehicles the way we did."

"I hate to break it to you, but our cover is blown," Whisper points out. "Those bounty sheets clearly identify who we're working with. We don't have to make it obvious that we're them, but we'll not be able to keep that sort of subterfuge going for very long in the best of situations...and walking into Merctown isn't that."

She grimaced and rubbed the center of her forehead.

"All right. I can disguise us when we go into Merctown. I can maintain the disguise for..." Whisper considered, "...lets say two hours, and still have enough power to deal with unexpected situations. Is two hours enough time for us to get a vehicle on our own would you say? Do we have enough funds to even contemplate it? I don't know about you, but I barely have living expenses in cash right now."

Brody is listening to all. He thinks Whisper is on the right trail. "Disguise! You're right Whisper we need to change our look. and they know we have less people now, but the Glitterboy, that is easy to recognise. It stands out like a sore thumb. Is there a way that we can fold it up and put it in the ATV. But we need to be able to get to it quickly. So we put up a shell around the vehicle."

"Now I can hide anywhere.. The next most likely to give us away is, Nomel, so yes he needs to have a makeover. Now Whisper you are the final one. Does anyone have invisibility? Your idea of using disguise is great but I want to know all our options."

With a smile, Whisper says, "Invisibility is something of a specialty of mine."

She glances skyward.

"We should do this by night though. My powers are far stronger when I don't have to fight the sun."

Brody looks at the group , " I do have a way of getting word to Elle of the Owls . I'm suppose to file reports. and it is pretty secure, I mean just one person and they relay." I contact my person in Psyscape and they contact the liaison at the castle and then they speak to Elle of the Owls."

"It is not know for speed but security is high, called Dream Vision."

To some one on his shoulder, "Yes , maybe I shouldn't have told them. But you know . And this might affect others in the castle and in Psyscape."

Brody turn to the others , "Sorry about that. I was being reminded if to many people know about a thing then it's not a secret anymore. "

Inside his armor, Nomel's eyeflaps flutter, the Fennodi variation of a raised eyebrow, but he opts not to comment on Brody discussing secrets with someone who isn't there. "I'll concede the point about our cover being blown, Miss Whisper. Well, if we can get a thin shell put up over the back of the truck, I can hide inside it, and just burst out if we need to--I can 'crouch', I think, enough to hunker down as well as I could with it folded up, anyway. Something like a covered wagon, or an old-fashioned troop transport. Think we could use some of these shelters for the tarp? So that'll hide me from view, too. I can even keep my sensors active--visuals will be blocked by the shell you put up, of course, but radio and sonics should still work fine."

Whisper glances at Brody speculatively for a moment, then shrugs as if the news was of no great consequence.

"If you can let the Legion know of our predicament and ask for some support, it could help us greatly. We have a bit of time before we start moving if we want night to fall before we arrive after all."

She nods at Nomel, "That also gives the rest of us time to see what we can rig up to conceal your suit. If worst comes to worst, we may not need to worry too much. Glitter Boys aren't especially rare in these parts. We can splash some paint on it, and if the rest of us don't match our descriptions that should buy us some time before we have to swat more bounty hunters."
